The FIA is to reopen the pit lane during safety car periods after software revisions designed to limit speed across the circuit was deemed a success.

In 2007 the rules were changed to prevent cars charging back to the pits as quickly as possible, potentially through accident zones.

FIA Formula One race director Charlie Whiting revealed that tests at several races last year of software revisions were satisfactory and so the pits could reopen - with drivers monitored as they return to the garages to prevent unnecessary danger.

"The rule introduced in 2007 was a bad one, and we've gone back to the 2006 regulations," said Whiting.

"The only difference is we intend to implement a minimum time back to the pits.

"When we deploy the safety car, the message will go to all the cars, which will then have a 'safety car' mode on their ECUs.

"As soon as that message gets to the car, it'll know where it is on the circuit, and it'll calculate a minimum time for the driver to get back to the pits. The driver will have to respect this and the information will be displayed on his dashboard.

"If you remember, the reason we closed the pit entry was to remove the incentive for the driver to come back to his pit quickly.

"That's gone now, as you won't be able to reach the pits any quicker than your dashboard display allows you to."

Under the 2008 rules many drivers were given penalties for returning to the pits without permission, despite being forced to as fuel ran low.

That led to a coordinated attempt to find a solution for 2009.

Good to see the rule is gone but still a complicated rule and I feel there will be some porblems with this one too.

I'm not sure it will work as intended, they keep complicating it more and more...

yes i was thinking about the minimum time every driver is given...How about if someone is near pit when he's given a time? I think it's better for him to stop behind pit entry than to lap behind safty car and then enter the pit...with that thing in mind, there should be some problems there IMO.

It could be difficult to monitor did all 20 cars lap in given time - there are only 3 judges and they usually review only upon the complaint from a team. Besides, not every safety car period means rushing to the pits for a free pit-stop, especially in the last 10 laps of the race...
