The problem is the BBC have Legard working purely because of the sound of his voice. The guy is a lame brained twit.

As DLR was approaching Buemi to overtake, Kubica pulled an amazing last minute overtake on him- fully aware that DLR was distracted, and not very race-sharp. Not one comment from the bbc.

You know, commentary can be a real distraction.

For years I have watched the races abroad . . . I don't really follow Russian or German that well and French TV is better with the sound off altogether . . . the commentators are hysterical.

The lack of commentary has never bothered me . . . James Hunt and Brundle's comments are always useful, but the rest you really can do without.

The main thing I missed was the big numbers disappearing so you could easily differentiate the cars.

cheers for the tips Gunk. I'm going to watch the Aussi GP with french commentary. Maybe my french housemate can translate the fun bits for me. Either way, I wont have a clue if what they are saying is garbage- and if they sound excited, then that is two plus-points over the feeble-brained soporific Legard.

I'll be in the US next week - anybody know if I'll be able to watch quali and the race there? And if so, will it be live?

Thanks for any advice!

I always have David Croft on commentary. Either through the red button or DAB radio.

Williams and proud of it.

Oh, it's a few years since I watched on French TV, but it was always hilarious.

First you would get the sponsor track . . . Elf Elf Elf Boum Boum Boum . . . repeated ad infinitum in an echo chamber.

Then the two presenters: 'Allo Jean Claude. Allo Christine'.

Then a daft question: (Kimi has been leading for at least 30 laps.)

'Est-ce que Kimi encore le leader, Christine???'

Cue for live race sound effects. 'Wheeeeeeeeyoing'.

Christine says: 'Ah oui oui oui oui oui oui oui Jean Claude, Kimi est encore le leader!!!'

(SFX: Wheeeeeeeeeyoing)

Jean Claude says: 'Merci, Christine, Kimi est encore le leader!!!!'

Now the sponsor track kicks in again . . . Elf Elf Elf Boum Boum Boum . . .

No, it was never soporific. But about as informative as an empty bottle of Perrier.

That's gold. I hope it hasn't changed since then, although I have no idea how I will be able to stream it. Did you say they would play car sound effects over the sound...of the cars? Or have I misinterpreted?

Growing up with Murray Walker, I never found him very informative. I don't want informative- I have eyes, ears and a brain- I just want to feel that I am watching the race together with someone who is genuinely enthusiastic and amusing.

There was a canned effect in the presentation in the old days . . because it used to go out over the radio too. There would be an insert in Sunday afternoon music radio every ten laps or so.

As I recall, F1 was hugely popular in France in the eighties, nineties, Mansell, 'le moustachu' was popular. Alesi was God. I even used to by 'L'Equipe' in the UK because it always had the best F1 news.

It's really sad that they don't have a driver or a GP these days.

Jabouille, Arnoux, Prost, Laffite, Depallier, Alesi, Panis...

what now? It's such a shame.

i don't really want to interrupt this dialogue but this is for the 'gunkster'. the correct spelling is 'BUY' not 'BY' l'equipe.

those people who live in glass houses just don't want to get the message. carry on.....
