Williams hoping to hold onto Hulkenberg
Sir Frank Williams is hoping to nurture Nico Hulkenberg at Williams and has tipped him as a star of the future.

Hulkenberg made his Formula One debut at last weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix and finished 14th after spinning early in the race and ruining his tyres. He experienced success in the junior categories, winning the Formula 3 Euroseries in 2008 and GP2 in 2009, and Williams sees him as a key part of his team's future.

"Nico is our big star," he said. "He has won every other series that he has done, and the only other driver to have done this is Lewis Hamilton. That says everything."

Hulkenberg's manager Willi Weber recently said he had plans for his driver to join Ferrari in a few years, but Williams is keen to keep the 22-year-old at his team for as long as possible.

"It is up to me that they don't snatch him away," Williams said. "I found it very unprofessional that Weber is saying he [Hulkenberg] will be with Ferrari in 2013. Anyway, I hope Nico is with us for a very long time. I have put an experienced driver - Rubens - by his side, so that he can learn as much as possible."

If we do want to keep him then we are going to have to put him a race winning car.

Williams and proud of it.

Exactamundo pbj - it's the car & the team that makes the driver stay.

I have always said an Alonso, Hamilton, Kimi, & maybe Vettel makes up any difference of 2/10th -3/10th's deficit.
Anything bigger than that gap is dependent on the team.

Webber was his first teammate right? Unfortunately, MW has the "F1 is not a finishing school" mentality.

I think Nico has a lot of potential, but this discussions should be held when he has already proven some of that potential...

You will see Hulkenberg mature over the season. I'm absolutely sure of it. It is consistent with what he is as a driver, much like Lewis Hamilton.

What williams has done is more than anyone else. The team has given him a lot of technical expertise and driver knowledge as to how a proper driver should be.

This is what we missed in Rosberg, partly because MW wasn't exactly the greatest of people to learn from that one season.

Frank williams made the same comment about rosberg. He isnt with williams.

Having barrichello at williams has nothing to do with the future of hulkenburg. Vettel didnt need a senior driver to groom him, nor did hamilton. So I dont see how webber and rosberg learning from him or hulk from rubens is relevant.

At the end of the day, if hulkenburg is as good as the williams hype, he will move on to a better team unless he has a podium worthy car.

The key to a team is two drivers who are pushing each other and are competitive, not an elder statesman grooming and teaching a supposed new star.

Williams tried with Alex and then we had to take Kazuki for whatever reason.

Williams and proud of it.

I agree, he completely bought me with his GP2 performance. He measured up to more experienced drivers and after finding his legs a bit and learning the ropes he completely dominated the second half of the season. His determination and will to improve are truly astonishing, I believe he has the strength to bend the team around him and to lead them to excellence.
Also, I can't wait to see him in wet race again - I'm not sure was it his skill that made him so good at Nurburgring or the fact that it is his home track. I have a feeling we have a true rough diamond on our hands here and I hope he will get to ''shine'' with Williams team winking smiley

We know that Ruby gives 110 % all the way to the flag, and if this young charge Hulk can do what Hamilton does then that is worth 3 tenths of a second a lap alone.

My curiousity lies in how Ruben's has shaped the factory in contrast to what Hulk has gotten used to over the past two seasons. I believe this will be critical to Ruben's influence over Hulk.

Nico H has already been quoted that he learns from Rubens by 'watching how he works'.

However, he's going to have to better next race, doncha think? It was a dismal debut.

He had a poorish car for the first race nad panicked a bit.i think.
He will learn but we must give him a car to go racing with.

He made several rookie mistakes, I expect he will make more of them this season.

All rookies are entitled to make their mistakes. Don't forget that Ayrton reputedly turned down front running drives to go to Toleman so that he could make his mistakes out of the spotlight.

Williams and proud of it.
