Thanks Pgj for reminder...most ppl (including me) remember greats by their death time.that's a terrible thing to do IMO as we're thinking of a legend who's memory lives on.

Quote:
Triple world champion Ayrton Senna would have been 50 years old today.
The Brazilian legend electrified Formula 1 from the moment he arrived with the humble Toleman team in 1984 until his tragic death at the age of 34 in an accident during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Senna would ultimately win three world championships with McLaren in 1988, 1990 and 1991, and developed one of the most intense rivalries in motorsport history with main opponent Alain Prost.

To mark what would have been his 50th birthday, AUTOSPORT has compiled a gallery covering Senna's spectacular career, from his early successes in junior racing to the F1 triumphs that made him a hero around the world.

I find this thread disturbing.

Remembering one of the greatest F1 drivers ever if not the greatest on what would have been his 50th birthday if he were still alive today,...Well i don't think 'disturbing' would be quite the right word to use for this thread,... would it Dufferconfused smiley

I find this post more disturbing to be honest, although to be fair the thread title should be more "Remembering Ayrton on what would have been his 50th birthday" rather than "Happy birthday"

it is a pity when anyone dies, however i don't subscribe to the 'greatest ever' as people apply to senna.

yes, senna was an exceptional driver at times but do not forget that he was supremely arrogant and his driving was a testament to that fact. how many times did he drive others off the track?

if he tried those tactics today he would be black flagged or at least penalised severely and rightly so.

schumacher had a great role model. people, me included, criticize shumacher a lot but all he did was copy sennas MO. a little perspective wouldn't go astray here.

Yes mansell's left nut, you are quite correct. It is interesting to note that Senna would have been 50 today and it is great to remember him.

But to say happy birthday to him? Creepy...

I find this thread disturbing.

What is wrong with celebrating someone's life and their life's work? Nothing to be disturbed about in that.

the whole "world" celebrated the man's life...

people have their different views about him... and like all the greats before him He is and was the centre of controversy!

He was an unlucky guy to have died that day. But May 1st was his day to die, and it was his time... maybe to us selfish people it wasn't his time. But it's because of him, and thanks to him that today we have the safest cars in automobile racing.

If Senna hadn't died he'd still be the legend he is today, and he'd probably have at least 5 titles... but someone else would die instead of him.

all in all, we must remember, it didn't just take His life to change the sport, it took everyone's life to change the sport.

Panis and Schumacher changed the sport with their broken legs, Kubica changed the sport after his horrific crash in Canada, and Massa surviving the face of death last season... the sport will continue to change by driver's nearly missing death.

So thanks Ayrton for your time on earth that brought us joy, anger, delight, and disgust. Remember the life, not the death... He was taken from us, but he was also give to us 50yrs ago.
