Sir Frank Williams admits that it was "a mistake" to let Adrian Newey leave his team after rejecting a request to give him shares.

Newey joined Williams in 1990, and had won 51 races, three drivers' championships and four constructors' titles by the time he left for McLaren mid-way through the 1997 season. Williams went on to win both 1997 championships too with the FW19 - the last car that received Newey's input - and has not won a title since.

Williams has revealed that the reason behind Newey's departure was a disagreement over shareholding, and admitted that it's proven to be an error.

"He wanted some shares that I didn't want to give to him at the time," Williams told F1 Racing. "[That] was arguably, with hindsight, a mistake. Adrian is quite a remarkable individual."

Reflecting on the troubled season that the team endured in 2011, Williams said that the car was fundamentally slow. He added that while the new technical team should see the team improve he believes Williams will never have the quickest car while Newey is working for another team.

"I'm not an engineer but I've seen lots of good cars and lots of bad cars - and ours wasn't quick enough. It was deficient in most of the areas that matter, but we were completely lacking in the most important one of all, which is aero. And probably a bit of horsepower. It just wasn't a quick car.

"The Renault engine gives us hope. We have three new technical people - one is our technical director, one is chief of aero and one is running the cars. They have different backgrounds coming from three different teams. There's still a problem, it's called Adrian Newey. There's only one of him."

Well DUH, Sherlock Williams. We could've told you that 14 years ago.

Only one Newey and only one Rory Byrne. He has won 7 championships and without him Ferrari is back to the spaghetti mentality. Aldo Costa is now at MB.

Williams was able to beat Mclaren in the BMW era without Newey. Newey is the best now but someone will take his crown eventually. He is only 53 years old so we should have Newey for a while.

Newey is beatable as we ave seen in the past. The problem right now is, under the current rules Newey currently has the march on everyone, he is forcing Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes to chop and change their TD's, and their design approaches. He has an engine guaranteed to be at least as good as everyone elses, and he has arguably the best driver in the world.

Why wouldn't he lose? It's the same as Ferrari in the early 2000's- the best formula, and everyone else in disarray.

The upcoming changes to the engine regs will be a good opportunity for another team to change the form book, but there is absolutely no guarantee of that.

Newey is the best. He said he never wanted to leave Williams. It was the way he was treated at Williams that caused the split. I never thought the gardening leave business anything other than a childish hardball mistake.

All designers make mistakes. These days Adrian makes fewer than most. It is true that the next regular change is an opportunity to level things up and I hope this time we have the ability and capability to get off to a flying star. But don't forget it is also a chance for Adrian to recharge his interest. By his own admission, he makes mistakes when he is bored. The next regular changes stand every chance of keeping Adrian on top of his game too.

Williams and proud of it.

Nothing here SFW has not said before, but I'm finding the timing interesting for publicly re-stating it. Patrick is no longer part of the F1 team, Were Coughlan and Gillan both at Macca during the Newey years? Has Adam worked out the financial implications of woo-ing Newey away from RBR?
Best not hold our breath on this, but something might be in the wind.

Now he has everything he wants. According to the rumours, Adrian have some shares at Red Bull Racing, also he is gaining more money per year than 70% of the drivers at the grid and more important to him, he is living with his family at UK.

Sometimes it make me laugh when I hear rumours about Newey leaving Red Bull to join Ferrari, it make no sense to him.

Does anyone think that there is any chance in the future to see Newey joining Williams again? IMO I dont think so. The new Williams is far from the team Newey left 15 years ago, this Williams team is lacking of almost everything. There is nothing Williams can offer to him in order to leave Red Bull and join them, apart history, and I am fraid that history is not enough. Newey is making history by his own at Red Bull.

Sad but True.

Yeah, this piece of news pops out every year or so. Nothing new.

Williams hasn't invested in the biggest technical names in the paddock. Sam was home-grown, kind of... and the current lot are a mix and match from different teams, not A-List in any way (I'm not saying they're bad).

But at least they are better than Sam "The Loser" Michael, I mean Sam Michael was like a dog-making factory. It was a nice day when he leaves Williams, because that opened the door for new oportunities for the technical department.

I don't think it's as clear cut as that. The team has acknowledged that the main problem was structural, not necessarily that they didn't have the right staff. Of course, if that was the only reason you'd figure SM would still be with the team.

I don't think Sam was that bad. More of a scapegoat than anything else.

I think you can replace Williams with any other team name in this article & they can say the same about Newey.

But I think that unless he's an alien of some sort, Newey is human like any other person & without challenges, they get sloppy & will stumble.

Returning Williams to glory would be a nice challenge for Newey.

Somebody should tell him that.

C'mon dude, if the team has acknowledged that the main problem was structural, why the team accept his resignation? In other hand if it was something wrong with the team structure it was his fault, because he was the technical director.

Maybe Frank could offer Newey some shares and when the day comes when Frank retires the team becomes Williams-Newey F1, just thinking out loud really, I dont think Newey will stay with RBR for ever, he doesen't need money so it has to be an attractive challenge, owning a major part of the team and ressurecting a fallen giant could be that challenge.

Re: Williams admits Newey 'mistake'

Newey wants new challenges and loves boat designing and hydrodynamic designing. He once designed a Volvo Ocean racer and I do think that after RBR we will see no more from Newey on a large scale. He will follow his own path just like Barnard and Byrne did after their big successes.
So no more Newey for us and altough I hate seeing him having left us and all the successes he has had, its unrealistic to think he would have stayed on board even when he was offered a large share of the team. Everyone has his or her expiry date at any company. And in Formula One you can not name one eternal employee of one single team. Maybe Jo Ramirez at Macca but thats it.
