Time to move to Honda?
Bond (IP Logged)

Should Williams take a leap of faith & take on Honda as a partner?

Should they jump in where Mclaren vacated just in time for Honda to turn it around?

Or is it pure suicidal for Williams as an organization for which they may never come back again from the abyss?

I liked it to happen...even with forgetting 2018 to see them start performing but Claire has already refused such a deal with most straight way possible.
What I think is we should better Paddy's decisions on this, between those involved in the team (and probably across the grid) he knows the best how to turn an underperforming team to a good team with his plans.
Maybe sticking to most safe option for engines and focusing on our really weak points like chasis, aero, gearbox and suspension (well all of the car!) is better and then when we had a first level car, we can enter the fight for risking on engine side.

One thing I think Williams may be open to is a factory deal where they basically pay nothing for the engines like in the BMW days.

Isn't that what Williams have always wanted: a near manufacturer's deal with\out interference from the manufacturer?

Of course that's not a good example of how well things eventually DIDN'T work out.
But I think Honda are a bit more humbled than BMW ever was.

That all said, I think taking safe, logical steps has been what Williams has done all these years & have settled in comfortably in as a midpack team.

Is that what we as fans want?

Paddy Lowe knows more than most about how to extract the performance from a Mercedes engined car, from the inside. Maybe we won't see the best of that if we change our engine supplier. Right now, Mercedes is the best engine. I am comfortable with a new supplier in 2021 but we need to see if we can get firmly back to p3 in WCC next year using Mercedes. And if we do, then we can think about our options. But right now the engine is the part of the FW40 which is spot on.

Bond, that's exactly what I am talking about with a difference: we did @#$%& up in BMW years, not them! How they entered and how they turned to be the class of the field in 2003, was phenomenal! Even if I hate to confess that.they joined us, considering it was only 2 years after us making the best chasis.it was a logical choice for BMW, like if a new engine supplier wants to join F1 and now and probably Mclaren and Redbull are the most desirable choice for them...Not us!
So I believe we don't have a chance to make a deal for works team or free engines or whatever you call it, with a competitive supplier till the time we are so @#$%& on our chasis side.they don't join for free unless they are in a miserable state of Honda.probably that's what Paddy thinks about: make the team work and make correctly, then good options will be unlocked.

The thing with Merc is you are always second with developments. Like last weekend. The works team had the latest update but the customers didn't because they couldn't manufacture enough. Stay with Merc power and best we will do is fight towards the top, go with another works exclusive deal and we might be no1 or not like McLaren are now!

Have Honda and McLaren anounced a split?

If we want to win a world championship again - in fact win races again on a consistent basis - we need a works deal. Mclaren knew that, that is why they went with Honda, it just massively backfired - but actually - if we joined up with Honda now it could work even more in our favour.

Mclaren go with Renault - it's a weaker engine and they won't be a works team so they'll play second fiddle to Renault and probably Red Bull as well. Honda will also really want to prove a point as well if they get dumped by Mclaren and hopefully would help invest in the facilities at Grove or give the backing like BMW did.

At best we'll be battling for third with Red Bull if we stick with Merc - for the simple reason as already pointed out - we're down in the food chain on latest spec engines, we don't have a works budget and if Renault pick up the game on the engine side we have another fully funded works team to fight. Worse than that TR may become a semi works team making the midfield battle even harder.

I heard two commentators talikng, one saying honda to tsr would be good for them. The other questoned why. The first said, well it is a factory deal. That would be great. The second then waited in a confused pause and clasically asked... but, doesnt it depend on the factory?

Sounded funny, but he was talking about Honda like they were a basket case. Honda! Honda! Crazy times. When i was a kid, Honda had great powerful cars.

They are unlucky. They spent a fortune only for Ross Brawn to take all the plaudits.

And now they pour hundreds of millions only to get VERY negative Publicity.

Alonso did them immeasurable harm with all that silly talk on team radio. It's nothing to be proud of, He should just leave if he lost faith. after all they pay him in gold.

They aren't unlucky. I LOVE Honda and I LOVE their cars. I used to sell and work on them all the time. Utter brilliance. Then they sell out at the moment of glory, go on some idiot crusade for Hydrogen power and generally are about 5 years behind the curve ALL THE @#$%& TIME.

Come on Honda. What about all those great cars which never went wrong? High revving, flat to the ground. Just perfect cars.

Get it back Honda. You @#$%&.

Seen the new civic Ozzy. Styled by a lunatic with a CAD package. I used to draw smarter cars when I was 9!

Up to a point, Lord Ozzy, up to a point....

Setright, (aka LJKS - and the world's best motoring writer, to explain to our younger and antipodean listeners) a long, long time ago, absolutely swore by Honda's cars and bikes - in fact he transferred his allegiance from Bristol as, in his very experienced view, makers of the best road cars in the world. (Round about 1985, my grandma seems to remember.)

But it was an awful long time ago and the latest winged horrors and Blingomatics from Honda do suggest their complete and total loss of plot since then.

Completely separately, but it is a nice story....

Way back when, CAR magazine, for whom LJKS wrote, actually dared to rubbish a new Honda. Outraged, the MD of Honda wrote to the Editor saying that as CAR dared criticise their lovely new car, Honda UK would no longer be advertising in the magazine. But CAR, which was then knowingly the best car mag in the world, full stop, merely printed the letter on the Letters page without comment - and thus established with all its readers that the mag's comments were based on independent thinking rather than advertising revenue or pay drivers. This was a period when you could read letters from Giorgetto Guigiaro and Bob Lutz in the letters column of CAR (oh come on, you must have heard of them, one designed all the best Italian carss, other was Head Honcho of Ford) so such a public exposure really hurt Honda. Sadly no car mag has such balls nowadays.

Kinda like the 2017 NSX meself ... take that over Audi or a Austin Martin any day. Though I suppose if you're comparing Lada to Hyundai to Skoda. Bob's your uncle.

Used to get Car in the 80's. It was a brilliant mag. Still got a few somewhere. There was one issue called 'Reds' where they compared the Testarossa and Countach on a long road trip. Remember JLKS' column too.

@ Whitey...so you've anted up just shy of half a million Dollars for a Honda ? Might i ask a simply question, why? For that money you can drive a Ferrari/Aston Martin or even a Maclaren [no honda engine] so what was the deciding factor? I am genuinely puzzled although its quite some car IMO it doesn't compare to other three that i've just nominated. That said, cars are a personal choice so whatever makes you feel good is always good enough.
