Good morning,

I know that many here don't follow the financial side of Williams, but this year is very tight, just how tight depends on how much RokIt are paying, which still seems to have remained private and what the attitudes of its lenders are.

If Paddy goes without any compensation and salary for the remainder of his contract then there should be some money to reallocate. If his position is unclear then it does seem that adding £5-£10 million to the payroll for a few big names would be out of the question.

I get the impression that Claire has got it into her head that because Williams aren't the richest team they can't afford to compete with anyone and is just waiting for the budget cap.

My hope is that PH will instil some urgency into the team otherwise there will surely be a gradual departure of the best people as great opportunities arise elsewhere.

The current predictions seem to be that the budget cap will start at $200 million, excluding drivers, at least one key person but I expect that that may rise and marketing spend.

Even when the budget cap does kick in the historic big spenders will have an historic advantage, Merc and Ferrari will almost certainly update all of their development kit with the best and latest just before the cap kicks in.

A "fairer" prize fund redistribution is probably only going to bring Williams closer to where they were last year and the year before.

Even though I keep getting surprised by Williams pulling some extra money out of the bag, things like Stroll money, Bottas transfer fee, PDVSA exit fee etc, these are borne out of the historic strength of the team.

I can't see there being big money tie ins for Kubica or Russell.

I can easily see Williams closing the gap to the back of the field but as long as Claire is setting the expectations so low, she has been saying that the team doesn't have enough money to win for a few years now, I can't see how they will go much further.

Mclaren have made big improvements this year and it is not at obvious that it was the result of big expenditure.

Interviews are horrible things, they get edited and taken out of context but that linked article reads like the top of the management tree, not just CW have no idea why the PL project failed.

But don't worry it is all very simple and PH will come in, find out what went wrong and fix things. :-)

Bye

Ian

I am pessimistic. The FW42 is costing Williams a fortune... it may even cost the team its future.

I know F1 is an expensive business but holy sh#t... Throwing money down a toilet generates more return on investment than the FW42.

The rumours are Latifi in, Kubica out at Williams?

Maybe Latifi to take Kubica's race seat this year?

Look at this photo

Kubica's injured arm looks so damn skinny, Kubica's whole body looks little and skinny and his head looks huge lol.

@Whitey
C'mon mate, posting pointless stuff just for the sake of inflating the threads with your nametag is (usually) tolerated, but hijacking two threads for mocking the injuries of a man is just rude. Get a grip.

Can someone please explain what the plan is at Williams with
1 the car
2 the business
3 the drivers
I get the feeling the plan = Survive in the very short term!

It should be all about sorting all the mess out before the 2021 rule shake-up IMO. Make sure that in a year time, key technical people at Williams (whoever they are at that point) know why the 2019 car failed so much and how not to repeat that for 2021.

I could live with very sub-par driver pairing in 2020 to provide as much funding as possible. I could live with very poor results in 2020 as long as the team know what they are doing before 2021. Just put the right people in charge and understand all the correlation issues if there are any and make sure any organisational and cultural issues are solved by the time the 2021 car is in the crucial design phase.

Williams should add this man to their team. He did great stuff for Force India. No nonsense type of guy, bit like Sir Patrick Head.

My thoughts exactly. Plus ran a tight ship on a shoestring budget

Well lucky we avoided Rich Energy:

Can’t say this was a surprise, especially after they lost the right to use their or turns out not their logo.

Good news on Merc. I wonder if we will take the gearbox / suspension. Noises from Clare suggest we will in order to avoid what happened this year.

There are arguments in both directions but logically, if you can buy bits from the fastest car on the grid, that has to be a good starting point.

One reason that we were so compatitive in 2014 that no one ever mentions were our gear ratios. It was the first year with the new PU and the first year that you had fix gear ratios (you could change them pne in the seson) and Williams had the longest gearing from the lot. It turned out, that the engine had enough power at lower RPM with lower fuel consumption, that next year, almost all other teams hat almost the same gearing as Williams. This would not be an option if we would not made our gearbox in house.

Couldn't agree more especially if it eliminates potential problem areas so they can just focus on their shitshow aerodynamics

The interesting part is it says "beyond the end of next year"

So the deal was 2014-2020, not 2019...and if there's going to be a "new deal" with gearbox included , it won't be for next season.

I seem to remember when they announced the Mercedes deal in 2013 it was for seven seasons, was that to tie in with the end of the current Concorde agreements, etc.

For what it's worth (we'll have to wait for phatjack's definitive concern-troll opinion to know what that is): Autosport video, "Details of Williams's plan to fix its F1 woes".
