I'm Running the Bath Half Marathon in aid of Wings For Life - Your Help Needed!
growler (IP Logged)

Part mid-life crisis, part desire to get fit / less fat, has led me to commit to running the Bath Half Marathon on March 11th this year. To ensure my efforts also support a good cause, I have decided to run in support of “Wings For Life”.

As many of you will be aware due to their Red Bull links, Wings for Life’s mission is to raise money to fund research into finding a cure for spinal cord injury paralysis. Their four main areas of activity are: cutting-edge international research, clinical trials, scientific communication and prevention. To date the charity has funded 55 projects around the world. Wings for Life’s overheads are paid by the Red Bull Company which ensures that 100% of funds raised go directly to the research to cure spinal paralysis. The charity has a number of high-profile supporters including David Coulthard and of course drivers Sebastian Vettel & Mark Webber.

Nearly 3 million people around the world live with a spinal cord injury, and the number is growing by approximately 130,000 each year. The main causes include traffic accidents and falls at home or work and the average patient age is only 33 years old. The good news is that leading scientists agree: Injured neurons are able to regenerate - paraplegia will be curable one day.
I would welcome any donations which can be made by visiting

www.bmycharity.com/wings4lifebathhalf

Many thanks in advance for any sponsorship you can offer.

No bullshit. It works. He is a 30yo scientist who is obsessed with the human body. His fixation is what will be the most effective with the minimum input/changes.

The has access to scientists, geneticists, olympic medilst trainers, etc... that are the top of their field. All his claims are backed by research conducted on him and other subjects at top American & European universities by world renowned researchers.

Having studied human biology at university myself I have never seen anything like this, as complete as this, as well researched as this all condensed into one book and made available for a lay person and structured and worded in a way that anyone can understand.

I used to waterski race, train on the ski 5x week & gym train every other day. But with kids and family, I gave it up. I am 178cm & weighed 87.4kg 17 days ago. This morning
I weighed 78.2kg.

I could put heaps more data for you all on the last 17days, as I have been doing VLA body composition tests every 4 days (tests bone, muscle, fat, intracellular/extracellular fliud compositions) - same equipment used by NASA to check body compositions of their astronauts whilst in space. I have been doing weekly bloods fbc, u&e's, c/m/p, tft's, lft's Etc.. Etc.. But at the end of the day as amazing as all the results are all I can really say simply & quickly to people is:

Do yourself a favor & READ THE BOOK!

Haven't read the book loud but I get the feeling it isn't
The mind is unbelievable if can be taught to unlock it
Not that I know

I guess the book is about mind power
If you go to sleep thinking your fat , fat thoughts , fat this fat that the mind responds and only hears the thought fat
So we stay fat

If you only think skinny thoughts , skinny this
The mind hears skinny thus your wish is my command
The hardest part us the mind training
And staying focused thats the demon to beat
Your own mind
It's tough

I can attest to the success of a low-carb diet approach.

Just lost 16kgs (2 1/2 stone) in the last few months myself this way - down to 79kgs, which is the lightest I've been since my competitive sailing days.

Don't miss the junk food too much, but looks tempting sometimes!

It's amazing how much we all over-eat, without even thinking about it, once you start looking at your nutient intake in detail.

I can recommend [www.myfitnesspal.com] for anyone who wants to track their food and exercise - includes good phone apps.

The body is a machine that runs from energy. It doesn't matter what form the energy goes in as (carbs/protein etc.) if it gets burnt, it's gone. If we burn more than we consume, we get lighter and vice versa.

F1man, drop the mind body crap.

Not quite true though Duff. I used to think that way too.

Michael Phlps was consuming 12000 calories/day at Bejing Olymp's - so in theory he should have had to buterfly 10hrs/day on top of his base metabolic rate. But he was nowhere near that sort of energy use. And the didn't gain weight.

So thermogenics played a part, as do hormones, as does the efficiency of one's GIT etc...

The type of food eaten certainly plays a part as the speed that energy can be formed from say fats/proteins pales in comparison to carbs. Hence someone on a carb restricted diet would not want to excercise too strenously as they could not prodcue energy quick enough from what they consumed & would then cananbilise themselves first by Ketogenisis then by breaking their muscles down back to amino acids - causing the yoyo effect.

I have put myself in a ketogenic state to two weekes before, the discipline needed to do & then stay there is silly & the ammount of urine testing that you need to make sure you are not producing too many ketones (& over working your kidneys) is a over the top for your average person. The results are amazing as you go into a fight/flight mode & all your sense's are heightened (hunting mode). But I couldn't do it to often, and don't really need to.

Read the book.

Yep, I can't disagree with you Loud. Somewhat bland food without the extras, I was the condiments kid too. But I can do it ok as I like steak on it's own & I love greens, I'm getting experimental with various herbs. I love the result though, & ab's.

Although, there is much more to the book than food. The science interests me. So too the excercise stuff - gym, swimming, kettlebells, etc... Speaking of kettlebells,

Well, the easiest and most obvious piece of advice in the book is to track whatever you're doing. It's obvious and easy and something that I hope everyone would be doing, but just tracking your weight, or your resting heart rate, or how far you're running, or how many situps, or whatever will provide motivation/validation and thus better/quantifiable results.

Agree with that, LH.

At the most basic level, it's a pretty simple formula - energy intake less energy burned.

If you're doing any regular exercise, there's an obvious culprit on one side of the equation.

I swim laps most days and always thought I ate reasonably well until I started tracking my intake in detail. It's pretty easy to cut back once you run the numbers.

I don't doubt toptoy's recommendations work even better than the program I've followed, but I've found it fairly easy to shed the excess by making some simple changes to my diet.

I've been going to the gym and running since October and no essential weight loss. As soon as I started counting the calories I was consuming and burning, I adjusted my diet and suddenly lost 3kg in about 3 weeks.

Plan to get about 7 more off before footy season starts, over 10 weeks, so should be a walk in the park. Or jog...

Thats good enough for me.

But the ones that go on and do things
Mind is 90 fitness talent "relative" to field 10 percent

It makes me wonder why you underestimate the crazy amount of power the mind has in any situation

Good effort Duff.

Humor me & try this:

1) Don't drink calories
2) Drink cold water from the fridge that you add ice to as soon as you wake.
3) Eat breakfast 1/2hr after drinking water
4) Place a bag of ice on the back of you neck/top of shoulders every weekday night for 1/2hr - yep it sucks for 2 min but it is easy after that.

If you don't want to do no' 2 then make no'3 - eat breakfast within 1/2hr of waking.

In a way what you say is true, but there are too many variables to be calculated - thermogenic effect of ambient surroundings, humidity of the air breathed, smoker (makes you inefficient), would you actually ever bother weighing your faeces - Loud, there's one for you to measure!

There are idiots out there that do stupid things like fling themsevles down mountains on sticks, running in to trees breaking their necks. To them I say, suck it up. Research to help the innocents I'm all for though.

As for fancy schmancy diets, stop lining the pockets of of every L. Ron Hubbard type that invents something to make money. It's not rocket surgery. Eat decent food, consume less energy than you expend, and open the fridge door less and the door to outside more.
Now pay me 1 million dollars.

I completed the Bath Half Marathon yesterday in 2:11:32. Thats 4.5 minutes under my initial target, but slightly slower than I had hoped for which I put down to the unseasonally warm weather we had. (I've been training over the winter in temps of -1 to +10 Celsius, but a brief high pressure gave temperatures of 17 degrees on race day).

Had a great time anyway and beat the times of Christian Horner (2:32:10) and Adrian Newey (2:34:40) who were running the Silverstone Half Marathon at the same time.

In the process I raised close to £1,000 for Wings for Life. Its not too late to donate if you wish to, which you can do by clicking www.bmycharity.com/wings4lifebathhalf
