Isn't that an "L" shaped side pod with a bridge? I'm only looking at that linked photo on a phone but that's what it looks like.

Some more

Will be low as they state that they made to deck the same height as the nose reg, hence no ugly bump. The intakes look good. Wasn't expecting the exhaust exits to be where they are. I can't wait to see it in Melbourne.

Be intersting to see what the RBR comes up with.

It's not that interesting, plus you're probably not going to get a lot of constructive responses to "it looks understeery" when we haven't seen any footage of it on track. O_o

having just seen the new ferrari and force india i have come to the conclusion that these stepped nose cars are some of the ugliest of all time.

i am fervently hoping that red bull doesn't follow that trend and the looks are more in line with maclaren.

of course on a more pragmatic approach it doesn't really matter so much if the car is blindingly fast but if it not then adding the looks would just compound the disappointment.

what is not too clear at the moment is, apart from maclaren,
the others claim that the step nose was a compromise in order to meet the new regs. some how maclaren have overcome this!!

about three days ago i was surfing around and hit on the post where a senior maclaren person hinted that maclaren may be facing legal challenges to their interpretation of the new regs. without any warning this post disappeared and according to other sources maclaren, when questioned, denied the very existence of that statement!!

i am just wondering whether or not the 'nose' is part of that whole mystery or whether it was just a wind-up.

I really hope that if Adrian Newey has looked at this stepped design, he said to himself, "Sorry but I just can't build a car that will look like that".

I'm just a mug but it looks like a drag magnet.

The McLaren nose is unremarkable and plain but that is true to form. I don't think they followed the Red Bull inspired scalloped design did they?

On this shot the macca does appear to have the bump, they have just done a much better job than the rest of hiding it/making it blend in better.

Not sure if you Aussies can see the video in this link?

Gary Anderson takes a walk around the McLaren and one area for discussion is the stepped nose (or lack of it). The stepped nose allows the bottom of the chassis to be higher, thus getting more airflow to the back of the car where it can be used to create downforce. Gary is a bit suprised that McLaren haven't utilised this and wonders whether it leaves them with less scope for development later in the year.

They're just running the max height for the nose that they can within the regs all the way along. McLaren aren't doing this, they're within the limits of the regs by choice, nothing illegal there.

I heard from a very reliable source that the non stepped nose approach is in fact understeery, hence suiting Mark even less. He will be a full 1.5 seconds behind Seb this year!

I said before "Will be low as they state that they made to deck the same height as the nose reg, hence no ugly bump. The intakes look good. Wasn't expecting the exhaust exits to be where they are. I can't wait to see it in Melbourne."

The max height for the chassis was some 60 odd mm higher than the nose, hence the step. Macca just made the whole lot to the nose height reg.

To lower the nose for safety is one thing, but to allow cars to be lower sort of cancells that out. I am sure Macca didn't just make the whole car to the nose height...

If you look at the Ferrari and the Mac from the side on view you can see what they've done;

The front part of the noses stick out at the same height (about halfway along the P in the Pirelli name on the tyre). The height of the tub just in front of the cockpit seems to be roughly the same, the McLaren just has a gentle curve down to the nose, while the Ferrari is obviously stepped.

The primary differences seem to be that this gives the Ferrari a somewhat curved edge on the bottom of the nose (behind the front tyre)[much as we've had the last 2 years], while the McLarens looks very right angled.

McLaren have confirmed the launch car exhausts were in fact made out of plastic!

New Lotus is the best looking of the stepped nose cars - may just be down to the balck masking the uglyness!

The stepped nose allows you to continue the maximum height further forward towards the nose, which in turn gives more space underneath (as the front of the chassis has a specific dimension).

By not going for a step, McLaren have to start tapering the nose earlier, thus loosing some air space under the very front of the chassis.

so then if the mclaren is faster than the ferrari it will prove that the 'hump' was the wrong way to go....or not, as the case may be.
