Asked about the Post Box slot on the nose, Mr Newey said

"The slot at the base of the ramp to the nose into the front bulkhead is simply driver cooling. Traditionally that is right at the front of the nose. Really for styling as much as anything we moved it to where you now see it to break up the aesthetics of the ramp that is required by the regulations."

Do we believe him???

Final Times from day 1:

Kimi Raikkonen Lotus 1:19.670 75 laps.

Paul Di Resta Force India 1:19.772 101.

Nico Rosberg Mercedes 1:20.219 56.

Mark Webber Red Bull 1:20.496 54.

Daniel Ricciardo Toro Rosso 1:20.694 57.

Michael Schumacher Mercedes 1:20.794 42.

Kamui Kobayashi Sauber 1:21.353 106.

Jenson Button McLaren 1:21.530 62.

Felipe Massa Ferrari 1:22.815 69.

Heikki Kovalainen Caterham, 1:23.178 28.

Pastor Maldonado Williams 1:23.371 25.

Pedro De la Rosa HRT 1:23.676 44

A slow start to the day due to late component arrival, but seemed pretty good thereafter for Mark.

BBC's Head F1 Reporter writes

"So Raikkonen fastest on day one, but that Red Bull appeared to ease rather comfortably into the 1:20s late in the day. Ominous."

No. The question is why not. I'm not cleverer enough to work out what they're doing but I'm pretty sure there won't be no difference between the two which means one is better than the other. If it's better to have it at the ramp, then they would all have it there. If its not, they're up to something.

massa certainly wasn't brimming over with enthusiasm!! they will be there though and mclaren are playing a very low profile.

so far the RB seems to be fast out of the box.

Re: Jerez Test Day One
Ozzy Osbone (IP Logged)

RB is always going to be quick with Newey. It's almost a given really. He can't build a bad car.

Macca, I think they are half a second off but I think they can get this back through testing and I think come melbourne, RBR may have only a slight edge.

Ferrari, I am 'worried' about, although I really care not. It would be good to see Alonso in the hunt, purely for entertainment value. But that car looks like a pig and I don't buy this set up only malarky. Surely they would have tried for a fast lap? Are they really that confident? I don't think so. Maybe there is something in the car they need Alonso to unlock and then they will be fast. As of now, I think they are 1-1.5 seconds off the pace.

Really impressed with some of the midfield teams this year. The long run pace seems to suggest they will be much closer, especially FIF1 and Torro, which is good for you Aussies. Ricci looked impressive in testing.

Mark was apparently pretty chipper when he spoke to the press after day 2, Heikki as well.

Buxton says the best cars on track at RBR, McLaren, Findia. He also said the Lotus looked good, but I think Kimi was pushing quite hard, he seemed to be the only one flopping off the road after all.

As always, probably find the front runners all have something left in the bag, whereas the mid-runners are runing flat out to impress the sponsors.

I can't believe the Ferrari's will be that far off the pace come Melbourne.

Williams was fastest at Jerez last year; in general, looking at the times at the end of the day isn't that much of a guide. Better to try and follow the times live, see stint times, then glory laps stand out. Comments from people who know their stuff who have been trackside are gold though, Heidfeld had the grid order worked out before Bahrain in 2010.

RBR vs Macca at the front looks like. Lotus look fast but ???? Ferrari look in a world of pain but can Alonso pull that 1.5 seconds he carries around with him out of his pants at the last moment?

I think it's RBR vs Macca for the title but this time Webber looks better on the tyres. Can he put one over Vettel? Would be good to see. Hamilton will be a serious force this year and JB will always be there.

Probably as fascinating is the Force India / torro / Williams scrap with Di resta vs the Hulk and Senna trying to prove he can do it and then Ricki don't lose that number vs Van Damme.

All very cool.

I hope Caterham isnt the flop of the season it looks to be.

Yeah, speculation. Fun but I'll wait before I say too much.

All cards will close to chest, but I must say that RBR seemed to reel off 1:19's quite easy & consistently pretty much straight out of the box - albeit in mostly 5 lap stints.

I look forward to Ferrari getting their new philosphy/concept sorted. Sad that the media seem to want to use Massa out of context so much to make themselves some news on how slow Ferarri are on the first days of testing, shame on you Ferarri for not doing 15's out of the box on the first of a 130 lap stint.

f1 man, Heidy was in the know though. He was following all the cars & could see who was strong where & who was fighting their cars on the limit, and his predictions were right. Shame his not out there as it would be intersting to see what he had to say.

I look forward to 20 lap stints in the last test, then we'll start to get an idea.

Will be intersting to see how long the new pirelli's last this year.
