Aus GP Race

Getting a bit jittery.

Not a bad start to the season - especially after the way they qualified. Mark must be pleased to improve on that 5th place.

DR did well to score points so the contingent from Aus should be reasonably pleased. GB didn't do so bad with 3 brits in the points.

Pretty good result for us, we're definitely not the best car anymore, but we seem to look after our tyres pretty well which is good.

I was going to say "Sort out your damn starts Mark" but it's been 10 years or whatever and it hasn't happened so meh.

Another shocking start from Webber. Lucky the SC saved him and kept interest up for the end of the race.

Webber's best result in Aus since his dream Minardi start. Can he keep up the improvement for the rest of the season?

Ferrari looking ordinary. Kimi looking rusty.

Mark sounding positive after the race and glad to be on the pace with the lead cars.

Good result considering Mclaren have the faster car.

On another point thou how may tumble weeds pass this board these days. Before the success of the last few years a race thread would have 100+ posts but times move on I guess.

It's because most of the fans are Aussies. The aus race is typically low throughput as we all watch it live on TV.

Since SV dominated last year, most of the fans had nothing to come talk about.

There are exceptions, but I reckon that probably covers it.

Enjoyed the race, thank god for the safty car which spiced it up and was great not just for Mark, but for riccardo! 9th was a great result after being at the back of the field on lap 2 with that pitstop.

Safety car or no Safety car Webber was still going to finish in 4th.

Pity Mark messed his start - again - as he looked to have better race pace than everyone from the second stint on, except maybe Button as he seemed to have a bit up his sleeve.

Red Bulls lack of straight line speed is going to hurt this year. If the Mercs continue to have good quali pace we are going to find it hard to get past when need be.

All up not a bad first race.
Well done to Dan Ricciardo too.

I think Mark started braking at the start finish line for the first t1! He really needs to grow a set of starting balls.

I get nauseous each time Button wins as I think that could have been Mark if only he hadn't put so much trust in Sam Michael's.

Though both drivers did their best today.

one comment i read stated that mark webber suffered from an 'over engaged' clutch At the start and subsequently got mugged.

i would like to know the technical details of that statement.

He engages it with his fingers, so I guess he pulled the lever too much... He is a very poor starter.

i was rather hoping that someone with mechanical knowledge of the latest clutch technology in F1 cars would venture an answer. anyhow i have just read a report that said, 'it has been confirmed that the problem with webbers start was an equipment malfunction'. whether or not this is accurate i don't know.

maybe someone who knows what they are talking about may be able to shed further light on the subject.

As Duffer pointed out, whilst Marks get away was nothing to write home about, where he really lost out was in the braking zone before T1. He was on the anchors way before those around him.

He was 7th with no one alongside him when he braked, so it was a poor start but not completely awful, by the time he got to the T1 apex he was 11th and a car that was a good 6 car lengths behind him when he braked was alongside him, it was ridiculous. Massa almost got him and he must've been 100m back before the braking zone!

I heard an interview with Alonso and his comments were that Webber is a super talented driver so if Alonso thinks Webber is a super talented driver well that is good enough for me.

Alonso is a great driver himself for him to call Mark a super talented driver is a good thing, Alonso knows more about F1 driving and Webbers driving than what we do.

I'm not doubting Marks ability as a race driver. He can pull off some great moves, and is clearly quick.

His once legendary qualifying pace and ability to qualify a car beyond its capability seems to have deserted him though. His starts / 1st laps have become a big chink in his armour too.

I think both these are down to trouble getting tyres up to operating temps and/or confidence in knowing what grip is available on new tyres.

as being closer to RB than any of us growler, can you source the facts behind webbers slow start. i have read reports, that appear to be unauthenticated, that webber has a problem with the clutch that was down to the car not webber?

Whitey, whenever Alonso starts talking about people like that they usually become his next team mate. Alonso is more political than Prost. If he's talking someone up, he's probably actually trying to persuade his team to hire them because he knows he can beat them.

So are you starting the Webber to Ferrari rumour again Ozzie (Sm143)

My thoughts too, Ozzy.

Alonso's worried that he's slipping back into Massa's clutches, so needs a new team mate!! (Not that I'm trying to knock MW, of course!)

I think Alonso knows that Massa is out of a drive at Ferrari and he's angling to get a driver in he knows he can beat. The last thing he wants is Lewis taking a big money option to go red because he made Alonso look very ordinary at Mclaren.

Webber would be ideal. Plenty of help setting up the car but ultimately not a real challenge for the title against Alonso in the same car.

Ozzy what makes you think Webber would not be a real challenge for the title against Alonso in the same car?

Webber has never been in the same car as Alonso and he might just be a challenge to him,...you never know Ozzy.

One other thing Ozzy, where do you fit into at this RBR message board? Where do you sit? are you a Red Bull fan or a Webber fan or a Vettel fan or are you a Williams fan? Just curious to know?

Dare I say it, but Webber in this car is faster than Vettle, as is Button over the Ham..
