Seb In Big Trouble
Posted by: Quickie (IP Logged)

I am a massive fan of Seb but am concerned that he is struggling to get the balance right and a good feel for the tyres this year.

Im thinking his 2 WDCs were maybe as much a bit of luck that the tires suited his driving style, the car was the best and he got the needed support from the team & they got right behind him.

I hope Red Bull take a more balanced approach this year so that they give themselves the best shot at both tittles or they could get neither....

I dont like Mark much but this could play right into his hands if the team have fixed the eqipment issues that have been hurting his starts most of last year & in Melb...He seems to have really good support this year which is really good.

Hopefully Seb goes round a third time this year but could be more difficult with the car not being as dominant...Hopefully it was as much talent and not just the car and exorbitatnt team support that made him look like a star....

Go Seb

It's a bit too early to draw too many conclusions. Firstly, I think the tyre characteristics will be more like 2010 this year, and rather than 2012 being the odd one out, 2011 will be (especially with off throttle blown diffusers). Seb won in 2010 and 2011 so he's straddled different styles there.

It does look like Seb is struggling a bit, and Mark looks pretty comfortable, and yet Seb has been running ahead of Mark towards the end of both GPs so far.

It's likely we might return to a 2010 type status, where Mark on a good day and Seb on a bad day will be pretty close, but if Mark doesn't bring his best then Seb will probably beat him regardless.

We'll see, a street track and a wet race don't feel like the best sources of data at this point, even though it's all we have.

Speaking of being in trouble:
F1Today.net

- Vettel's attack, however, was sustained, with Kleine Zeitung newspaper now quoting the Red Bull driver as having said: "Maybe formula one is not the place to learn how to drive."

Err, he has a bit of a short memory. Doesn't reflect well on him.

Very Alesi-esque that little incident. Reminded me of a simpler, more exciting time when driving a broken car on the limit just to remonstrate with a competitor still meant something... thumbs down

Agree LH its a bit too early to draw conclusions.....tho Seb seems to reverting to his underconfident frustrated personality from 2010 which could be his undoing....He could take himself out of the equation more so than anyone else me thinks

From the angle of recent footage for mine Seb caused his own accident or could have done more to avoid and his reaction was not ideal....but.....given his age is not surprising....almost expected of a yong man who wants to win with tunnel vision and a splash of tall poppy syndrome...

Mark will need to get lucky to be there abouts this year tho Seb could place him there if he doesnt stay cool....

I can see Seb doing some amazing things this year in a tighter competition but also see him doing some things out of desperation &/or frustration that may cost him........ to Marks benefit

Time will tell but looks like a great unpredicable year ahead.....Definitely wont be boring

I am hoping Kimi has a good crack this year also....not a fan of his personality - like a dead fish - but he will add to the intrigue of what looks to be a really competative fight for both titles thus far

cheers

Its not to early to draw conclusions I already worked out by watching them in Aus that Mark atm has it over Seb.. Simple and other teams have it over Red Bull.. This is not hard to read just understand the force!! I doubt this will still be the case once the team hits the Euro zone but for now this is what we got!! Understand this is the case and sleep easy!!

Seb this year just found another use for his one digit as he will not have it for finishing first for a few races.. So for now the Bird is out of the cage!!

Seb beat Mark in Aus and was beating him in Malasia so for mine Seb still has it over him but pretty even.....

I actually like seb better with a bit of monfrel in him - its his true competative personailty coming out....

In truth I hope Mark succeeds this year...He came close in 2010 and a unexpected title would be a nice way to finish his career..

Doubtful but possible atm....

Seb didn't get released into traffic because his change over to the correct tyre was late relative to much of the pack.

Everytime Seb has been "in trouble" he's come back and been very strong. He mightn't this time* but history shows us he'll be just fine, unfortunately.

*I don't think he's in trouble. Tough it's probably a sad reflection on Mark that being a couple of tenths slower than him for a couple of laps means you've completely lost it.

I beleive that about Kimi outside of the media eye....seems to be one of the boys who likes to party & live a up a fair bit.....From what we get of him tho he comes across as a dead fish....not interested in giving the fans anything positive in his interviews....He just doesnt like the media hype or the being the focus of attention...Thats cool with me....not a fan of him but do like his driving style when he is on.

I'm not surprised at all. My take on Kimmi (especially in the Ferrari days) is he resents a lot of the media BS that comes with F1 - the fact that he doesn't buy into a lot of the media / image thing is one the things about him that I find appealing.

There's a video of him getting a hot @#$%& in a Nascar truck somewhere which is hilarious. He also cracked me up when he explained to Brundle (I think) why he didn't attend a driver parade (K: "I was taking a @#$%&". Brundle "You'll have a nice light car then..."). Another clip I've seen of him was when he was about to take a journo on some hot laps at the Ferrari complex. In the background you can see/hear a chopper arrive and a minion comes to get Kiimi as the boss has turned up and wants to see him. Kimmi says 'tell him to @#$%& off - I'm doing something...'. And so on it goes. All up he's one of my favourite drivers. He, to me, is everything Shambleston isn't personality wise.

interesting comments from renault's embedded engineer cyril dumont who works on vettels side of the garage.

How come Vettel and Webber all of a sudden have different driving styles when for the last couple of years all we've heard is they are very similar?

Re: Seb In Big Trouble
Posted by: K1 (IP Logged)
Date: 17 April, 2012 08:20

well i have never heard that before flashie. to the best of my knowledge they have always had quite different driving styles. so much so that the evil dr. told webber three years ago that the cars were being designed around vettels style and webber would just have to change his driving to suit.

Re: Seb In Big Trouble
Posted by: Flasheart (IP Logged)

That was during testing when Mark was coming back from his broken leg and was pretty slow. Besides I'd take anything said by Marko with a couple of pinches of salt.
On numerous occasions over the past couple of years it was stated by both Horner and Newey that it made it easier for developmental direction of the car because both drivers had very similar styles.

Anyway I don't want to get drawn into this infantile fight between two egos, just saying what I recall.

Re: Seb In Big Trouble

I think I read in an F1 Racing article Newey mention they both drive development in similar directions.

Be tough having to go back to the 2nd test set up & start development from there, to have to go in a differnet direction to what they went. Waste of 8 or so weeks.

Re: Seb In Big Trouble
Posted by: K1 (IP Logged)
Date: 17 April, 2012 23:22

well for a start chaps, 'i think i read somewhere, maybe F1 racing, that they have different driving styles'.

apparently that is why vettel is using the 'older' style exhaust as it has been explained that vettel likes to carry more speed into the corners and the new system doesn't allow him to do that. couldn't possibly be a different style?

the evil dr.marko has just confirmed,[with a pinch of salt'] that vettel's driving style differs to webbers insofar as vettel needs a higher level of detail in the car and set up than mark does. in marko's own words, 'all webber needs is four wheels'.

that is by far the comment of the week for me.
