RB8 Floor
Posted by: growler (IP Logged)

Whilst no one went as far as protesting the RB8 floor in Monaco, a number of teams did question its legality (despite it being in the same configuration since Bahrain).

The FIA are moving to clear up the situation and will meet today to discuss whether the hole/opening in the floor just ahead of the RB8's rear wheels is allowed to remain.

Some reports suggest Red Bull already had FIA sign off for the design.

Just like the Mercedes double DRS thing, this will legal, doubt FIA will backtrack on this and make RB take it off.

It is a hole in the floor and I can't bel;ieve it is allowed. The simple solution would be to create a micron thin opening to the side of the floor to bring it into line with other cars. Hopefully this will not affect what it does to the air.

well horner says that they agreement in writing from the FIA [charlie whiting] that it fully complies and has done since bahrein.

I guess even a micron thin slot must be less efficient as otherwise surely this would have been done.

As you say K1, Red Bull seem happy that the FIA had given approval - but this doesn't mean the approval could be subsequently rescinded.

The rule in question states:

Quote:
All parts lying on the reference and step planes, in addition to the transition between the two planes, must produce uniform, solid, hard, continuous, rigid (no degree of freedom in relation to the body/chassis unit), impervious surfaces under all circumstances. Forward of a line 450mm forward of the rear face of the cockpit entry template, fully enclosed holes are permitted in the surfaces lying on the reference and step planes provided no part of the car is visible through them when viewed from directly below. This does not apply to any parts of rear view mirrors which are visible, provided each of these areas does not exceed 12000mm≤ when projected to a horizontal plane above the car, or to any parts of the panels referred to in Article 15.4.7

I am interested to learn how to interpret that in a way that allows the hole.

Edit to my final sentence - some thoughts here:-

very difficult growler. i have read these rules before and i am somewhat confused however those with the super intelligence that design and build within the F1 framework have provided the FIA with their interpretation and the FIA have agreed and put their stamp of approval on the issue.

surely the other teams have had enough time and subsequent opportunity to make their feelings known since this mod has been on the car since bahrein!!!!

it sounds to me as though red bull have found another loophole and they are exploiting it. a bit like the F duct really and of course mercedes trick front wing F duct.

if the FIA back flip on this then they will have a lots of oeuf on their collective faces.

I understand that a clarification of the rules will be issued by the FIA prior to the Canadian GP.

The argument seems legit, in regards to the floor, that is not a fully enclosed hole, the fin there is one edge of it and as far as the wording of the rules go, it's just nothingness in regards to the floor. So, our hole is the same as the Sauber/Ferrari holes in regards to the actual floor.

In the rules does anyone know If they are explained in words and diagrammatically?

I mean yes the "spirit" of rules when we sometimes team principals mention, I feel
This is just another way to
Say " either I'm lazy or
Not creative" enough to have thought that myself
Etc and excuses etc
Moving on, but are certain areas ( front wing for example) of car set out in dimensional zones,
Although they say front wing is X x Y in plan
But are these boundary points defined ?
Why couldnt floor start / stop
After / before holes say ?
I'm sure I'll be wrong as it's f1
Just interesting to think all
Elements fit within limits but boundaries are offset/ eccentic to element in question maybe ?
Lol I'm silly yea but need help and I know k1 and loud would of laminated this years rules and kept it
For restroom reading hehe smiling smiley
Love you both!

And it's been banned, so we'll be back to the pre-Bahrain floor for Canada, or have a slit in there if we can do one in time.

"know k1 and loud would of laminated this years rules and kept it

not a bad idea, but a little impractical; that document must be hundreds of pages long.

regards tt

ps my friend had a thanking letter from (either regan or bush senior) hanging in his dunny. (yes the letter was genuine)
