With Fernando Alonso's move to Ferrari in 2010 seeming to be a certainty, and Felipe Massa's future in any racing exactly the opposite, the question of who is to fill the second race seat is of much debate.
Kimi Raikkonen's attitude and commitment to Ferrari has been often question, but recent strong results in what appears to be an inferior car has shown this to not be the case. At least, for the moment. He has also asserted he would not give up on Formula 1 while in his prime. However, he has also been linked to a drive in the World Rally Championship for 2010, despite being under contract with the Scuderia until the end of that seson.
Ferrari Team Principal Stefano Domenicali has done little to assuage concerns over Kimi's futue. When asked about the Finn's term with the Scuderia:
"I am definitely not going to discuss that now. As everybody is aware,
Kimi has a contract with us next year and I am very happy with his
performances because he is driving very, very well, especially in the
second part of the season.
For the last four races he has
always been on the podium and I think, after Barrichello, he has scored
the most points, so he has shown the true qualities of fighting for the
championship. That is our position."
It still seems Kimi has the ability to compete for victories, regardless of performance issues at Ferrari. Yet there is no way to guess what he will do. Fisichella and Massa are both options for 2010 apparently, though surely a Raikkonen and Alonso pairing is preferable over this.
