He felt that winning is not crucial in these initial races, but getting some solid points for the team was more important. “You need to get used to the new regulations, to understand a little bit better the tyres.”
Though, he feels it’s nice to win, he thinks the key to being world champion will be the development during the season. “This is only the start. Now it is time to push.”
Trailing the Red Bull for more than half of the race, the Spaniard ripped past Sebastian Vettel as the German lost power due to mechanical malfunction in his car. With the blink of an eye, he was clearly putting in faster laps and was clearly unstoppable thereafter.
He had earlier overtaken his team-mate Massa on turn one, and was relentless in his pursuit of Vettel. Though the Red Bull was faster, he never lost sight of the German.
Alonso was ecstatic crossing the line for his maiden victory with the reds, and the radio exchange he made, in Italian, with his crew, strongly hints a strong bond he has made with Italian team, in the short time he has been with them.
"It is a special day for me," Alonso said. "Coming to the podium is always special but this year, it is even more special with the history behind the team and the expectations that a driver has when he drives for Ferrari. There is no better way to start the relationship."
The rivals would be ready for him at Melbourne in two weeks time, but Alonso doesn’t seem deterred by this, and we can look forward to some exciting races from this Spaniard, in what is now, his favourite red machine.
