MP4-25 a big departure from the 24

McLaren were quick to emphasise at today's launch how their new MP4-25 is a radical departure from last year's car. The MP4-24 was, by all accounts, a disappointment in its inability to provide Lewis Hamilton the opportunity to fight to retain his title. Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh praised the team for radically improving the car through the season - but joked they had a low starting point!

We've already touched on some of the changes to the car compared to last year, the extent of which Hamilton pointed out at the event, "The car looks so much different, completely different, and I feel so proud as I have had some input into it.

"We have been working on this car for quite some time now. The guys are working flat out trying to build components, develop and improve the downforce and aero efficiency."

Paddy Lowe, Engineering Director, said, "Just about everything has changed on the car, there’s very little that hasn’t changed, so we want to make sure we’re fully reliable for the first race."

Hamilton reiterated the importance of this, "We don't have a lot of testing compared to normal, now we only have seven days each. We have a big heavy fuel tank, narrow tyres - hopefully we can maximise each of those days to get as much running as possible and get to the first race in a great position."
