The Front Wing Battle

2011 Formula 1 season is not over and yet the teams have already started testing innovations for 2012.

With the WDC and WCC titles already assigned teams have turned their focus on the designs of their 2012 machines. Mercedes has reinforced it's team with the arrival of Aldo Costa and Geoff Willis among others.

One innovation which is quickly raising eye brows in the paddock is the new F-Duct front wing that MGP have been testing. There are mixed reactions to it such as McLaren stating that they are not the least interested in it's concept and others doubting it's efficiency or use on the track.

Some sites have reported that the advantage of having a blown front wing is to give a higher top end speed by reducing air resistance between the front wheels, others believe that it might aid air to the "Tea-Tray" section of the car and hence improve front aero grip and response. The concept in itself does not seem hard to be copied by other teams but it's the design of next year's car around it is what makes thedifference.

We have already seen Ferrari introducing a very "flexible" front wing this week during testing at the Indian GP. McLaren also have a new wing which has a straight main plate design compared to a split design of the previous version.

With the 2012 Nose Height regulations teams will be forced to dig deeper to find areas where they can pull out an advantage similar to the years of the double diffuser. The FIA seems inclined in making it as hard as possible but as usual the most innovative team will have the starting edge. Will it be RedBull again? We'll find out in March 2012...
