Arrows to miss the last two Grands Prix?

Silverstone 2002
By Huw Alban September 19 2002
As the 20th of September approaches rapidly - the day that Arrows were reportedly to pack for Indianapolis - there is still an ominous silence from Leafield. This has lead to a great deal of speculation as to the possible future of the team from several other media outlets.

F1racing.net has re-confirmed that the majority of the team’s workforce have been sent on leave. This, Speedvision believes, confirms the fact that Arrows will not be attending the final two competitions of the year. Speedvision understands the factory to be completely closed and the staff advised to “await future developments.”

It is believed that Tom Walkinshaw is still pursuing a rescue package with American investors, but there has been a lack of progress “over the contract negotiations.” Whether this affects the possibility of the team surviving remains to be seen. The only good news here is that the FIA are still maintaining their ‘wait and see’ approach, with no moves to punish Arrows for not competing.

Pitpass reports that the team may struggle to survive, even if the American deal is pulled off. This news site understands that several ‘key staff’ have already found posts elsewhere, and that, aside from the factory being closed, all of the locks have been changed too!

Pitpass goes further than most sites, accusing Arrows of treating the fans and the sport with “contempt.” It also says that the FIA have not acted swiftly enough to stop the bad press that is surrounding this saga, which, Pitpass believes, is casting the sport in a bad light. The former comment is something that has already been discussed on the forum here at AllAboutArrows; but as for bringing the sport into disrepute, that is something that this site’s visitors seem to disagree on.
