What has happened to Arrows’ American investor?

Save me!
By Huw Alban September 26 2002
Has Arrows’ American investor gone away? That was the question asked by grandprix.com a few days ago. The news site is basing the question on the wall of silence emanating from Leafield at the moment, and the fact that it is now some time since the ‘American investor’ deal was announced.

The popular news database also states that their sources in America back the notion that - whoever the mystery investor was - he has now lost interest. Where that now leaves the team is anybody’s guess, but sources available to this site suggest that the American option was not the only one open to the team.

It is widely thought that after missing the American race, the team will also miss the last GP of the year in Japan. Again this site’s sources hint that there is a possibility of the team making that one, but time will tell. Assuming the worst, then Arrows will have missed six races this year - getting on for half the season! Grandprix.com talks about Arrows pinning it’s future on a purchaser for the team and it’s assets, but questions whether it is really that simple. There are apparently difficulties over who owns what within the Arrows camp, something that might have put the original investor off, this site wonders.

The team’s biggest asset is it’s entry on the grid, and at this time there is no guarantee that Arrows will retain it’s position for 2003. At the moment, the FIA and the rest of the paddock, appear to be in favor of backing Arrows’ attempts to keep racing. But, again, in time that mood may turn to one of frustration and at worst the team could find itself being accused of being in breach of the secret Concorde Agreement. Added to that are the repeating legal battles with creditors and Morgan Grenfell, all of which must go some way to making an investment in Arrows a less attractive proposition.

When all is said and done, this doesn’t paint a particularly rosy picture. This site admits that the mood it has towards the future of the team shifts from hour to hour, dependant on who it talks to and what it reads. Recently sources available here indicated that what was being discussed in the press was not exactly accurate, and there could be some truth in that, bearing in mind that the official press office is all but shut down. It is also the case that although the factory is closed, negotiations and other progress is still being made behind the scenes at Arrows to secure a deal and perhaps go racing again in Japan. If Japan does not come off then all efforts will focused on securing the team’s 2003 position, an option that has already been discussed on one of the larger media outlets.

It is also a fact that the loyal Arrows staff are doing what they can to hang in there, and to be available should a deal be pulled together at the last minute. One thing is certain, Arrows are by no means dead and the fans should not be swayed by apparent lack of action on the surface at Leafield. Arrows will be back! This site feels better again...
