There had been rain overnight in Monte Carlo, but the first free practice session got started in dry conditions. There were dark clouds overhead and the local weather forecasters were predicting rain sometime during the day.
OrangeArrows had a reasonably busy hour, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Enrique Bernoldi languishing at the back of the field for the first half of the session. The tight and twisty circuit claimed two drivers, Pedro de la Rosa at the swimming pool and Kimi Räikönnen at Rascasse, but fortunately neither Arrows suffered any such dramas. Heinz-Harald pulled a blinding lap right at the end of the session, to go 5th fastest after 23 laps - 1.154 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher. Enrique Bernoldi put in 21 laps and could only manage 19th, but of course we have no idea what kind of set-up the team or the individual drivers were working on.
The second session saw immediate activity from the majority of the grid, as the weather forecast now said that there was a 40% chance of a shower. Unfortunately Enrique Bernoldi could not make the most of the session, the Brazilian experiencing a rare engine failure approximately half way through the session. Eddie Irvine joined the list of crashes, probably on oil from Enrique’s now wrecked Cosworth engine. In contrast Heinz-Harald had a trouble free second hour, and put in another 22 laps, finishing the Thursday free practice in 13th place. Enrique had only managed another 10 laps before his engine problems and consequently finished in 21st.
Judging by the teams differing positions, and the difference in lap times over the two sessions, it’ll be interesting to read the team’s own post-practice press release later today, to see what they were up to.
