Frentzen was the star for the team in the practice sessions today, finishing both in ninth fastest place. The first session started strongly for Frentzen, with the German fourth fastest for the majority of the 45 minutes. Frentzen remained ninth by the end of the second free practice session, despite improving his lap time by two tenths.
Bernoldi meanwhile had a less competitive practice, finishing the first in 19th place. An improved lap time, by nearly 2.5 seconds in the second session today, saw the Brazilian leap up the timesheets to finish Saturday practice in a more competitive 14th.
There was no action from the team until 20 minutes of the qualifying hour had elapsed. Enrique Bernoldi put in two quick runs, the second of which placed him eighth, 1.8 seconds slower than the provisional pole time. Heinz-Harald Frentzen didn’t turn a wheel until almost half the session had gone, but his first flying lap was a strong one placing him seventh.
During the second half of the session the times plunged so rapidly that it was difficult to keep track of how the team were fairing. With 15 minutes of the session to go Heinz-Harald had been demoted to ninth, and Enrique was languishing in 17th. As commented on the UK TV coverage, the Bridgestone runners were suffering today, with Michelin shod cars seemly having the edge over their competitors.
In their last two runs, Enrique managed to improve to 14th whilst Heinz-Harald had again been demoted a few places to 12th. Enrique lost one more place in the final runs for the grid, dropping to 15th, and Heinz was unable to improve and stayed 12th.
OrangeArrows will start the Monaco Grand Prix with Heinz-Harald Frentzen in 12th and Enrique Bernoldi just behind in 15th.
