Fantastic Frentzen ?

OrangeArrows achieved their second points scoring finish of the 2002 season, with a hard charging Heinz-Harald Frentzen finishing in sixth place. Enrique had an eventful race and eventually finished 12th, which is no mean feat considering what happened to him on lap 28...
Heinz-Harald Frentzen put all Arrows fans’ doubts well and truly in the ground, when he took P1 during the warm-up session today. The car’s race pace has always been better than that of qualifying, but we hadn’t seen much of that this weekend yet. Mr Frentzen soon sorted that one out !

Both cars got away cleanly for the start of the race, with Heinz-Harald making two places to tenth and Enrique Bernoldi one place to 14th by the end of lap one. These positions stayed the same until around lap 15, when Allan McNish stuffed his Toyota into the barrier at Ste Dévote, promoting both men up by one place.

On lap 20 a gear selection problem for Giancarlo Fisichella saw Frentzen make up a place to eighth. On the same lap Heinz-Harald also posted the fastest lap time so far with a 1:20.664. On lap 22 Mika Salo pitted, promoting Enrique one more place to 12th.

Enrique’s race then took a dramatic turn. He had been tailing and pressuring Felipe Massa for several laps and he decided to make his move down the start/finish straight. Both men were committed into the first corner, but Felipe locked all his wheels and with his nose cone pushed Enrique into the escape road. A quick thinking Enrique power spun his car and returned to the track in 15th. Massa meanwhile had to pit for a new nose.

Drama happened again on lap 40, although this time it was to the benefit of the Arrows team. Rubens Barrichello tried an ambitious move on the McLaren of Kimi Räikkönen and they ended up having a collision. Both cars had to make lengthy visits to the pit garage - Heinz-Harald Frentzen was now in sixth place !

Enrique made his first pit stop around lap 40, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen must have too, as he was now running seveth despite Juan Pablo Montoya retiring from second spot with a blown engine.

By lap 54 Frentzen was back up in sixth, with Enrique still in the race in 13th. The Brazilian gained one more place due to the retirement of Mika Salo, which put him 12th. Arrows’ second points scoring finish of the year wasn’t completely in the bag yet, though, as a recovering Rubens Barrichello, running in seventh, caught up with Frentzen and started to challenge hard. Fortunately the narrow streets of Monaco played into the team’s hands, and Rubens was unable to pull a move on the German before the chequered flag. There was at least one Arrows fan biting his nails for the last few laps of the race though...

Congratulations again to the OrangeArrows team and Heinz-Harald Frentzen for scoring a sixth placed finish and one more World Championship point.
