The weather in Canada stayed dry and bright for both of the Saturday free practice sessions. Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Enrique Bernoldi were out early putting in timed laps, and enjoyed an early tussle with the first runners for second spot. Later in the session, Heinz-Harald Frentzen caught the eye of the track commentators as he improved into the top six times. In all the team completed 26 laps, with Frentzen sixth and Bernoldi 15th at the end of the first 45 minute session.
The second session got under way with the skies starting to grey up on the horizon. Arrows were again out early, with a harmless spin for Enrique and an improvement from Heinz-Harald earning him seventh spot. The team completed another 33 laps in total during this final 45 minutes, with Frentzen improving his time by only one tenth and Enrique by an amazing nine tenths. OrangeArrows finished the free practice sessions in a slightly disappointing 11th and 14th.
The first ten minutes of the qualifying hour were silent in Canada, but the emergence of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya prompted the majority of the grid to get a lap time in, Enrique Bernoldi among them. Enrique took the fifth fastest spot on his first lap. Half an hour into the session Takuma Sato’s Honda engine let go, dumping oil all over the track. Frentzen was among the first out after the clean up, netting 17th on the way. Trackside commentary noted that Frentzen was much stronger in the practice sessions and that the team were no doubt unhappy with his time.
The last few minutes of the session were spoiled by light rain, meaning that anyone out to improve their times would be unable to do so. OrangeArrows will start the Canadian Grand Prix with Enrique Bernoldi in 17th and Heinz-Harald Frentzen in 19th position.
It transpired after the session that the shift in weather conditions and temperature had unsettled the balance of the A23s and neither driver was able to match their free practice times. Heinz-Harald also suffered a water leak which delayed his track time, and the team worked towards improving in the final minutes. Unfortunately the rain spoiled that plan.
