Disappointing start for Arrows on Friday
By Huw Alban
June 21 2002
OrangeArrows had a disappointing start to the European Grand Prix, with the only notable incident a rain induced off for Enrique Bernoldi in the first session. Despite early top ten form from Frentzen, the team finished Friday practice in 13th and 19th fastest positions.
Arrows had a quiet start to the first free practice hour, with the trackside commentary about the team almost non-existent. Heinz-Harald Frentzen completed 18 laps during the 60 minutes and recorded the seventh fastest time with no incidents reported.

Enrique Bernoldi had a more dramatic practice hour, finishing his session in the barrier at the Ford curve. Enrique had begun the session strongly, tussling with the likes of Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli for the top spot. Later in the session some light rain started to fall, catching the Brazilian out and spinning him off the circuit. Consequently Enrique was only able to complete 12 laps, and record the 18th fastest time.

The damage to Bernoldi’s car must only have been slight, as he was back out again for the second practice session to complete a further 14 laps. The rains that had signalled the end of the first session had stopped, but dark clouds still hovered over the Nürburgring threatening yet more damp conditions.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen spent the majority of the second session moving up and down the bottom end of the top ten. He completed a further 17 laps, burt was unable to better his first session time of 1m 35.880s. Enrique was able to improve by over two seconds but still languished at the bottom of the timesheets in 19th place, whilst Frentzen faired slightly better finishing the session in 13th.
