Top ten finish for Arrows at the Nürburgring
By Huw Alban
June 23 2002
The OrangeArrows team scored a two car finish today at the Nürburgring, with Enrique Bernoldi passing the Jaguar of Pedro de la Rosa in the last laps to snatch tenth place. Heinz-Harald Frentzen made a poor start and fought hard for 13th.
The Arrows team were looking forward to the European Grand Prix today, especially after a difficult Saturday.

Both OrangeArrows cars completed the installation lap, and made clean starts. Heinz-Harald Frentzen looked to get bogged down during his start, with the two Jaguars and Takuma Sato’s Jordan streaking down the right hand side of his car. He also got caught up in the incident involving the two Jordans at the first corner, with the German having to take the long way around the corner, losing more places. Enrique Bernoldi, starting from 21st place, made a superb start and by the end of the first lap was running in 15th position.

By the end of lap two Enrique had moved up a place to 14th, with Heinz-Harald not far behind in 15th. By lap nine both men had progressed one more place to run 13th and 14th. Lap 13 saw Enrique Bernoldi get it all wrong at the Veedol chicane, the A23 bouncing over the grass as he attempted to straighten up his car.

Around lap 24 both Arrows drivers made their first of two pit stops, with Enrique ending up 15th and Heinz 17th. Lap 27 saw the first corner clash between Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard, both retiring on the spot, and promoting Arrows to 13th and 15th.

By lap 35 Enrique had progressed to 11th and Heinz 13th, mostly due to a large number of one stopping drivers having made their stops. The Arrows team made their second stops around lap 44, with both men retaining their track positions.

With seven laps to go, Frentzen seemed to become tired of sitting behind Jacques Villeneuve in 12th and tried a move at the first corner. The German indicated in an interview with ITV yesterday that he felt the first corner would present opportunities, and here was the proof he was looking for. Unfortunately he was a bit ambitious and ended his move in a slow spin, forcing Villeneuve to take the long way around the corner. Fortunately Heinz lost no places in recovering and rejoined the race in his 13th place.

OrangeArrows finished the European Grand Prix with Heinz-Harald Frentzen in a hard fought 13th, and Enrique Bernoldi making a place to 10th ! The man that ended up behind him was that of Pedro de la Rosa, which means that in the last seven laps the Brazilian must have passed the Jaguar. This means that the team scored a top ten finish, and a finish in front of the similarly power Jaguar car – RESULT !
