Friday practice - Arrows stay in the garage

Killing time?

The first day of practice for the British Grand Prix was upset by wet weather, but this was of no concern to the Arrows drivers, as they did not participate in the practice sessions.
Friday at Silverstone was a day of heavy rain showers, and the first practice session began with the circuit wet, just after one such downpour. As a result of another late shower, the track was never able to dry, and conditions were always tricky. The second session took place in drizzle, with the tarmac remaining damp.

For the Orange Arrows team, concerns surrounded whether they would actually be able to take part in the event, given their difficult financial position. Following on from the latest reports, relating to overdue payments for their Cosworth engines, the two cars remained in the garage throughout practice. Indeed, it seems that Niki Lauda, head of the Jaguar-Cosworth-Premier group that supplies the engines, refused to authorise the Cosworth engineers to fire up the Arrows power plants.

Arrows’ boss, Tom Walkinshaw, has continued to take part in talks to try and smooth the situation over in the short term, and allow the team to compete. The long term situation is far from stable at the time of writing.

In the meantime, Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello, winner of the last GP, came out on top in today’s wet running.
