This site is gutted !
There’s no other way of putting it. It appears that whilst the bosses sort out the legal wranglings that are plaguing the team at the moment, the cars cannot run.
Enrique Bernoldi and Heinz-Harald Frentzen took to the track immediately once the qualifying hour got under way. Both men appeared to be on relatively good first timed laps, considering that this was the first time that a lap had been completed in anger by the team, but Enrique suddenly backed off towards the end of his lap and recorded a lap time of 1:19.843. Heinz-Harald Frentzen crossed the line slightly faster with a 1:18.497.
As both cars returned to the Arrows garage, ITV speculated that the team would not be taking any further part in the qualifying hour. During the Silverstone Grand Prix weekend coverage Max Mosley commented that a team had to complete one qualifying lap in order to have been deemed to have competed in a Grand Prix. ITV suggested that Arrows were doing just that in order to avoid a fine from the FIA for non attendance. In addition the TV station revealed that the Arrows team would have saved around £300,000 by not running during the practice sessions.
A few minutes after both Arrows cars had pitted, the ITV pit lane commentator, Ted Kravitz, confirmed that both drivers had gotten out of their cars and were taking off their overalls. Ted also confirmed that the team would be taking no further part in the qualifying session.
This site’s trackside contact also confirmed minutes later that the team were indeed taking the cars apart in the garage, presumably to pack up and go home.
It would appear that Arrows are trying to buy time to sort out their financial situation, hopefully before the German Grand Prix next weekend. Obviously there will be no Grand Prix race report from this site due to the team’s non attendance.
