At the start of the first session there was no hesitation from the team. Enrique and Heinz-Harald were amongst the bulk of the grid that took to the track, once the lights turned green at the bottom of the pit lane.
It was a further fifteen minutes before Arrows showed their hand, with a provisional fastest lap from Enrique Bernoldi - although he was quickly pipped by the Sauber of Felipe Massa. Heinz-Harald Frentzen had a quiet start to first practice, his name not appearing on the timesheets until about 40 minutes into the session, when he recorded the tenth fastest time. The German improved quickly to ninth in the next few minutes.
Trackside commentary from Hockenheim suggested that the Bridgestone shod teams would have an advantage in the currently cool conditions in Germany, and this statement was borne out by the fact that Frentzen stayed in tenth until the end of the first hour long session. Enrique appeared to struggle and could only manage 16th, but a technical difficulty resulting in him pulling off the circuit in the stadium section didn’t help his cause.
Enrique’s technical difficulties must have been slight as he was out and running in the second practice session, although again there was no action from the team until approximately 20 minutes of the session had elapsed. By then both drivers had only completed a further two timed laps, and had dropped down the order to 15th and 18th.
The 24th minute of the second session saw the first of many laps to move Arrows back up the order, with a time from Enrique netting him 13th. The Brazilian then improved again in the 40th minute to leap up the order to tenth. The next fifteen minutes saw a similar charge from Heinz-Harald as he too leapt up the order to 12th, followed by tenth in the 54th minute. His next lap was looking to be quicker too, but he slowed to avoid a touring BAR and that spoiled his overall lap time. Enrique also improved during this period and finished the session 11th, just behind his team-mate.
From a weekend where there was no running, to tenth and 11th fastest is an achievement in itself, and this site is pleased to see the team running strongly after a period of uncertainty.
