England Rugby -England Team Manager Martin Johnson

England Rugby have a NEW Team Manager - Martin Johnson. The best kept secret in town, NOT! Finally the Rugby Football Union have sealed the deal and have got their man. Whilst Martin may not have coaching certificates to his name, he has a very good rugby brain and I have no doubt will make a huge difference to the England moral and style.

England Rugby has a new Team Manager! - Surprise, Surprise Guess Who - Martin Johnson of course!

File photo dated 06-09-2007 of former England rugby union captain Martin Johnson.

England's RFU management of rugby over the last few days, weeks has been at the lowest of low.  Every day we have had the best kept secret of Martin Johnson being unveiled as the new England Team Manager and then a stutter and another.   Of course most sane folk will realise they have had to sort out a very real problem, that being the incumbent Head Coach Brian Ashton.

Well it looks like it has all been signed sealed and delivered.  We can now hopefully look forward to a mean, lean England scoring points again and more importantly winning games with passion, power and strength.

Whilst it has been dreadful to see the way Brian Ashton has been treat over the last few weeks, or should I say seemed to have been treat as nobody really knows who has said what and to whom!    It was obvious that he was not the one to take England forward into the next era for England Rugby.  Having said that I am sure we would like to thank him for all his efforts over the last couple of years and wish him luck with the role of ~Head Coach of the National Academy, responsible for the Saxons, U20s and U18 programmes, which he has been offered.

As for Martin Johnson well he has always been my hero and will remain so.  I have no doubt that he will bash a few heads together both players and management and we will see a very different England to what we have now.

I for one can't wait and wish Martin the very best in his new role.

A good omen maybe, only days away from St. George's Day, let us hoist up the flag  of St. George for change and a new wind to blow through Twickenham.

Well, IF(Sm26) one man can change the England fortunes, I think that Johnson is the one.

He will certainly unite the team. I wish him luck.

It's ok, Rob Andrew has appointed himself in charge until Johnson is available. My God.

tut, tut Fan of Rugby Martin said this in the statement...........

Martin Johnson CBE said: “It is a great honour for me to be offered this position. I am passionate about the England team and delivering success for it. Whilst I cannot take up my position until July 1 for personal reasons I will be working closely with Rob and the England coaching team on selection for the Barbarians match and the New Zealand tour, as well as selecting the first Senior Elite Player Squad of 32 under the new agreement between the RFU and Premier Rugby.”

Unqualified and untested at management. A poor decision, but not the first and I doubt it will be the last from Rob Andrew.

There seems to be a lot of concern over MJ's official qualification or otherwise for the role. In reality there's no 'certificate' anywhere that proves you're a good manager - though a world cup winners medal as captain suggests certain leadership standards have been attained! Frankly, when it comes to good leadership - you've either got it or you ain't and no amount of training or even experience (without success) will ever earn you the respect of your charges (let alone the public). MJ is a shrewd operator, a proven leader and a born winner - he has the measure of the RFU and there's more than a whiff of SCW about him. It's time for England rugby to get tough, angry and, to JD's point, even a little arrogant again - the rest of the rugby world has had it too easy for too long.

Don't really want to bring football up on this site, but Bryan Robson was a mainstay of the England football team. As a manager, he's appalling. Good players don't always make good managers.
