Two points for Nakajima in 2008 Spanish GP

Kazuki scores two points
By Andrew Hooper April 28 2008
For the AT&T Williams team the 2008 Spanish GP would see only one of the teams drivers finish in the points. Kazuki Nakajima would finish in seventh while team-mate Nico Rosberg would retire from the race with an unidentified failure while running in the same position. It was a result that the team could take some satisfaction from but there is still the issue of the lack of pace of the FW30.

 Spanish GP Race Review

The AT&T Williams drivers starting the sixty six lap 2008 Spanish Grand Prix from twelfth and fifteenth. Kazuki Nakajima would start in front of his more experienced team-mate Nico Rosberg. Alonso had run onto the grass on the parade lap when he tried to warm up his tyres. A silly mistake that luckily did not have any consequences.

NakajimaWith Raikkonen on pole and Alonso second the start of the race Kimi would lead from Massa going in to the first corner after a lot of movement of cars going along the main straight. Around the lap and there would be a crash between Vettel and Sutil. The Force India driver had made contact with Coulthard and would spin. Vettel simply had nowhere to go. This would see the Safety Car been deployed. Lap three and the cars were still under the Safety Car. Raikkonen was leading Massa from Alonso, Hamilton, Kubica. Nico was in eleventh and Kazuki dropped to fourteenth. This was a great start from Nico to see him make up several places.

Piquet would run wide and off onto the gravel while running in tenth. Kovalainen was in sixth followed by Heidfeld and Webber. Raikkonen was 1.8 seconds ahead of Massa. Nico was in tenth and Kazuki had moved up to thirteenth. They improved due to Piquet's spin and dropping down the order.

Lap six and Hamilton was attacking third placed Alonso. Piquet would try and pass Bourdais but the pair would make contact. Bourdais would pit to allow a change of front nose but the mechanics would find his left front suspension broken and he would retire in the pits. Lap nine and Raikkonen would set the fastest lap, 1m:22.508. Piquet would retire not been able to recover from his crash with Bourdais. Massa was 1.6 seconds ahead of Alonso. Lap ten and Raikkonen's lead was 3.3 seconds. Both Nico and Kazuki still were in tenth and thirteenth.

RosbergLap fourteen and the Ferrari's were walking away from the rest of the field. Hamilton was 1.2 seconds behind third placed Alonso. Alonso would pit on lap sixteen. He would return using the softer tyre. Alonso was now in eleventh. The fuel he took onboard showed that he was on a two stop strategy. Lap eighteen and Raikkonen was still leading from Massa. Hamilton was third followed by Kubica. Lap nineteen and Massa would pit. Raikkonen would pit the next lap. Webber and Trulli would pit from sixth and seventh. Hamilton was leading
from Kubica. Both would pit together on lap twenty one. They would come out behind fifth placed Nico.

Kovalainen was running third but would crash heavily into the tyre barrier at Turn three. He had a failure which sent him into the tyres at high speed. Nico had made his first pit stop. The safety car would be deployed. Kazuki was in ninth. Twenty four laps run and Heidfeld would have to pit before the pit lap was open, likely to incur and penalty. With the pit lane open Kazuki would pit, along with the Honda of Barrichello. Ruben's would come out of the pit lane with his front wing damaged. He must have made contact with something in his own pit.

NakajimaKovalainen's McLaren was very badly damaged with the front of the monocoque taking the full force of the impact. Thankfully as he was taken away of a stretcher he gave the thumbs up. They would finally remove his car and the race was able to restart on lap twenty nine. Raikkonen was leading from Massa, Hamilton, Kubica, Heidfeld, Alonso, Webber, and Trulli. Nico and Kazuki were in ninth and tenth. Heidfeld was given a stop and go penalty for pitting while the pit lane was not open.

Lap thirty two and Nico was looking to find away past Trulli. Heidfeld would pit for his stop and go penalty on lap thirty three. Heidfeld would come out last. This would see Nico move up into eighth and Kazuki ninth. Alonso would park his car onto the side of the track with what appeared to be an engine failure. The Spanish fans were bitterly disappointed. This would see Nico and Kazuki move into seventh and eighth. Barrichello had retired in his pit, leaving just fourteen cars running.

RosbergWith twenty eight laps left to run Raikkonen was leading from Massa, Hamilton, Kubica, Webber, Trulli, Nico, and Kazuki. But it would go horribly wrong for Nico as he was to suffer and engine failure going along the main straight. He would pull off the track with his race over. But at least Kazuki was now in seventh. With twenty two laps remaining Raikkonen was still leading from Massa with Hamilton third. Heidfeld would pit on lap forty five. The next lap and Massa would pit from second, joined by Webber and Trulli. Raikkonen would pit the following lap. joined by Hamilton and Kubica. The drivers would come back out on the harder option tyre after having used the softer tyre for the first two stints. Kazuki was in fifth.

Williams drivers running togetherReports would come into say that Kovalainen was been transported to hospital for further checks after having hit his head. He was able to talk with doctors. The opinion was that the front left rim on his car had failed causing a rapid deflation of his front tyre. This would cause him to leave the track. Kazuki would pit on lap fifty one. Glock and Coulthard would make contact with Coulthard suffering a punctured left rear tyre. Glock would pit to get a new nose. Coulthard would eventually pit for new tyres. Ten laps remaining and Raikkonen was 2.7 seconds ahead of Massa.

Hamilton was still in third followed by Kubica, Webber, Button, Kazuki, and Trulli in eighth. Button's sixth was a great effort from Honda. The race would wind down with Raikkonen leading comfortably. Hamilton was still pushing but could not make any real impression on Massa. Kazuki was till running in seventh and he would complete the race in this position, securing two points for the AT&T Williams team. The result could have been better had Nico not suffered an engine fail but it was still a good result for the team. But they still have to find extra pace from the FW30 if they want to achieve results better than a seventh or eighth.
