Rosberg improves to 6th in second Belgian practice

Nico in sixth
By Andrew Hooper September 5 2008
AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg would improve to finish sixth in the second Friday practice for the 2008 Belgian GP. Team-mate Kazuki Nakajima would find the going more difficult ending in fifteenth. Nico would set his time late in the session after a long red flag period due to an accident involving Fisichella. The conditions were very slippry with light rain affecting parts of the session.

 Belgian GP Friday 2nd Practice

The second Friday practice would get underway with about half the field coming
out, including the Williams drivers. It would be Vettel who would set the first time with a 1m:50.819. Next came Heidfeld with a 1m:51.471. Piquet would move ahead of the BMW driver with a 1m:51.334. But it would be Hamilton who would go fastest with a 1m:48.805. Next was Trulli with a time of 1m:50.521. Hamilton was on the softer tyre. Vettel would improve to pass Trulli and move back into second, 1m:50.249.

RosbergNico was down in thirteenth with a 1m:51.856. Kazuki was in tenth. Nico would improve to now be seventh, 1m:50.838. But the places were changing rapidly as new times were set. Coulthard was third followed by Bourdais and Raikkonen. Massa would move into second with a 1m:49.117 followed by Raikkonen in third. Hamilton would pit while team-mate Kovalainen had yet top set a time. Alonso was now in fourth with a 1m:49.389. Nico had dropped to twelfth, 1m:50.838, while Kazuki was in thirteenth, 1m:51.080. They would both drop one place as Fisichella moved into eleventh.

Kovalainen's first lap would see him now in sixth, 1m:49.721. Nico and Kazuki, who both had pitted, were now in fourteenth and fifteenth. Massa was still out on the track running on the softer tyres. Hamilton would return, joined by Nico. Hamilton was on the harder tyre. Kazuki was also out with fifteen
minutes of the session complete. Massa had improved his time with a 1m:49.002 to be just 0.197 behind Hamilton. He would lower it again with a 1m:48.838 to now be just 0.033 behind the McLaren. Raikkonen was in third followed by
Alonso, Vettel, Kovalainen, Trulli, Heidfeld, Kubica, and Coulthard in tenth.

Kazuki was now twelfth, 1m:50.680, while Nico had dropped down the order to be in fifteenth, 1m:50.838. Nico was in the pits as the light rain started to fall. Webber who would run off the track at Turn eight hitting the tyre barrier and damaging the left front suspension. The field had returned to the pits as the rain continued with the track been declared wet. So with a hour remaining there was no activity on the track. Nico remained in his car while it would be Bourdais who would be first to return to the track. He was on the softer dry tyre but he would say to his engineer that if he was the only one out then it was a waste of time. He would pit without setting a time.

FW30Several drivers were now getting out of their cars while they waited to see what the weather would do. Kazuki was still in his car with forty seven minutes remaining. With forty one minutes left in the session it would be Vettel who would be first to return to the track. He was on the soft dry tyre. His times showed that the track was still very slippery as a result of the rain. Fisichella was next out. He was joined by Sutil, Nico, and Kazuki. Raikkonen and Alonso were also out on the track. Massa and Kovalainen would also leave their pits as the track conditions improved. Raikkonen would spin his car at Turn nine taking off his rear wing as the rear of his car hit the tyre barrier He would limp slowly back to his pit.

Alonso would also run off the track and across the gravel but was able to continue. Fisichella would also spin his car and like Raikkonen crash backwards into the barrier. As the car spun around he would also damage the front. He would get out of his car while the session was red flagged. There was water on the track at Turn nine so it looked like Fisichella spun this. It appears that the water came from the tyre barrier when Raikkonen hit it. It was not very thoughtful on the part of Raikkonen to drive off depositing his broken rear wing in the centre of the track.

The session would re-commence with several drivers taking to the track. Kazuki was back out on the softer tyre. There was under twenty minutes remaining in the session. The times were off that been achieved earlier in the session as Kazuki pitted. Nico had returned to the track looking to improve from his fifteenth. He was running on the softer tyre. Piquet would also spin at Turn nine crashing backwards into the tyre barrier in the same fashion as Raikkonen. He would slowly drive back to the pits. His rear wing was still attached but it had being knocked out of position.

NakajimaNico would set a time that would see him jump up to fifth showing that despite the conditions quick times could be set. Nico's time was a 1m:49.405. This was over a second faster than his earlier time. As to what fuel he was running with this is the unknown. Hamilton, Massa and third placed Kovalainen were all out on the track with five minutes remaining. Nico was now in sixth as a result of Kovalainen's improved position. Kazuki was on the harder tyre as Massa went fastest in sector one.

Kovalainen would move ahead of Hamilton with a 1m:48.790 to go fastest. But his time at the top was short as Alonso went faster with a 1m:48.454. Massa would move into second with a 1m:48.504. Hamilton was now fourth followed by Raikkonen, Nico, Vettel, Trulli, Heidfeld, and Kubica in tenth. Kazuki was down in fourteenth, 1m:50.364. Nico would pit as the session drew to a close. Kazuki had dropped to fifteenth as Nico was pushed down the pit lane to his garage.

The session would come to an end with Alonso still fastest from Massa, Kovalainen, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Nico, Vettel, Sutil, Trulli, and Heidfeld. Kubica would see his car stop out on the start/finish straight when he was trying to complete a practice start. He would have to help push his car back into the pit lane.

For the AT&T Williams team the session would see an improvement from Nico but Kazuki was still struggling. Where the pace came from for Nico, around the one second mark in the session, it a matter of speculation. But his time was only two tenths faster than his time set in the morning practice. In that session he was only thirteenth. His second practice time showed that he had the pace in the session but will it be quick enough to see him survive in the top ten come qualifying.
