The over-riding memories for me of my visits to the Roman stronghold are, what a beautiful place to play rugby (although the ground isn’t the best) & what great knowledgeable supporters they are (if a little quiet).
In between Rugby matches I am to be found working in a town 7 miles away from Bath, surrounded by Bath supporters for a Company that are corporate sponsors of the Bath Rugby Team, and thought it would make an interesting read of their views on Worcester and the forthcoming game.
The willing victim for my interrogation was Dan Tozer, Captain of Bradford on Avon Rugby Team who play in the Southern Counties South division,
Q; We’re really looking forward to the trip down to the Wreck again this year, what do you suggest we “must do” whilst in the beautiful city of Bath to enhance the match day experience?
Trying to separate this from the next question is going to be a problem! The more cultural among you may enjoy a visit to the Roman Baths, the Circus or the Jane Austen museum among other things. However, these cultural sight seeing opportunities are not known to be associated with a trip to the rugby. Personally, I think that you can see all that you need to see whilst walking from pub to pub (see next question).
Please note that a lot of the Bath faithful see the rugby as an opportunity for “the wife” to go and do a spot of shopping. These are not necessarily views that I share with them but I thought it right to share this with you…………
Q; Where’s a good place to meet up and have a shady or two before and after the game?
The usual spots will be the Boater and the Pig & Fiddle but I would recommend the Salamander (John Street). It’s a Bath Ales pub which, if you are lucky, will be serving Barnstormer – named after everybody’s “favourite” Sky Sports commentator!
If you are up for a few beers prior to the game I would suggest making a start at the Assembly Inn before making your way towards the Rec along Milsom Street. You will find a number of pubs on Milsom Street but I would imagine that they will lead you to immediately think “chav”. Therefore avoid these and head to places like the Salamander, the Old Green Tree (Quiet Street) and the Huntsman (Bog Island). Should be able to get a decent pint in each of these. When it gets closer to kick off then brave the crowds and head for the Boater.
After the match it should be much the same drinks wise. If you fancy some food after you have made your way back through the pubs then the Rajpoot on Argyle Street is a top Indian that I highly recommend. If that all seems like too much effort and a burger is the food of choice then you can’t beat a Schwarz burger!!
Q; Who in the Bath line up do we need to be wary of this season (apart from Lee Mears and his liberal understanding of the “pulling back” rule)?
If Berne plays then be wary of his disproportionately large head – anybody seen Quagmire on Family Guy?!
On a more rugby specific note Claasens continues to be among the best if not the best scrum half in the Premiership. Abendanonanonanon will be a danger in attack but may give you some joy if you can put him under pressure – I fancy that Latham may well have a little bit of fun with him!!
In the forwards Lipman should do a good enough job to disrupt Worcester and create quick ball for Claasens. Rawlinson & Co. will need to front up to establish parity with a Bath pack who have really missed Danny Grewcock and are yet to fire this season. Even without Grewcock the Bath lineout continues to look strong and if, as I would expect, the Bath half backs can keep play in the right areas of the pitch then Worcester may find things a little uncomfortable.
Q; Who do Bath fan’s fear in the Worcester line up?
A Worcester side without Pat Sanderson is always more of a threat!!
That sly dig aside Worcester are looking a stronger outfit this year but, as mentioned above, I think that Bath will look to get the upper hand through the front five and their half backs. It looks like Worcester may still be trying to work out who there best ten is and if Crichton is the answer then you may need to rethink the question! How long until Latham tries on the ten jersey?
However, the Worcester back division from the midfield through to full back look to be one of the more impressive units in the Premiership but a lot depends on how much quality ball that they can get. Will be interesting to see how Benjamin and Gear (if fit / selected) match up against the Bath wingers if they get the opportunity to run at them. In amongst your higher profile names Rasmussen looks to me to be one of your more consistent performers and will be a big factor in determining the outcome of the game.
Q;What do you think the score will be come the big day?
Could go either way but I think a Bath victory – 25-18 (home advantage should give them enough).
Many thanks for your time, now could you please put a roof on your open stand so that we don’t get so wet!!
But if the stand was made permanent where would those poor old cricketers have to go and play?!!
My opinion, Wuss to sneak it, especially if they rest Butch which is the rumour . . . . .
