Poor result for Williams in Brazilian Qualifying
By Andrew Hooper
November 1 2008
With Kazuki Nakajima and Nico Rosberg finishing in sixteenth and eighteenth in the first period it would be a poor result for the Williams team after qualifying for the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix. It was not a total surprise to see Kazuki fail to make it past Q1 but to have both Kazuki and Nico fail make it past Q1 was a result that would be hard to understand for both the team and its fans.

 Brazilian GP Qualifying

Q1 would commence with Piquet first out joined by several other drivers including AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg. Piquet would set the first time with a 1m:13.208. Piquet was on the harder tyre. Glock would moved ahead of the Brazilian with a 1m:13.023. Barrichello was now second, 1m:13.030 with Piquet third and Nico now fourth, 1m:13.226. Button was fifth followed by Fisichella and Sutil. Kazuki and both Ferrari's had left the pit lane, joined by both McLaren's. Nico had pitted while Kazuki's first lap would see him sixth with a 1m:13.519. Barrichello was on the softer tyre.

NakajimaTrulli was now fastest with a 1m:12.226. Kovalainen was now second, 1m:12.366, followed by Massa, 1m:12.574, in third. Nico was now eighth and Kazuki tenth. But it would be Hamilton who was fastest with a 1m:12.213. Raikkonen's first timed lap would see him in fourth with a 1m:12.557. Massa would improve to move up to fourth, 1m:12.389. Nico and Kazuki were still in their pits with just under ten minutes remaining. Hamilton and Raikkonen had both pitted while Vettel moved up to fifth, 1m:12.390. Nico would return to the track while the top four remained in their pits. Piquet was back out and his next lap would see him jump to third with a 1m:12.348. Kazuki was now back out while both BMW's had yet to take to the track.

Seventh placed Glock would spin at the Senna S but was able to continue. Nico would pit without any improvement from thirteenth while Kazuki was down in sixteenth. Both BMW's were now on the circuit with six minutes left. Kubica would move up to twelfth, 1m:12.954. Massa was back out as Heidfeld and Kazuki moved into eleventh and twelfth places. Nico was now sixteenth. Coulthard would improve to move up to twelfth. Kazuki was now thirteenth and would pit joining Nico. Massa was on a quick lap been fastest in sector one. Raikkonen was also back out with just over three minutes left. Massa would put in a stunning 1m:11.830, the fastest time seen this weekend. It was set on the harder tyre.

RosbergRaikkonen would also improve moving into second from ninth with a 1m:12.083. Only four cars remained in the pits as the final minutes counted down. Massa would pit shortly followed by Raikkonen. The top six were all in their pits as the session came to a close. Glock would improve to move up to fourth, 1m:12.223. But Alonso would take this spot with a 1m:12.214.
Those not making the cut were Kazuki, Button, Nico, Fisichella, and Sutil. The top ten was Massa followed by Raikkonen, Hamilton, Alonso, Glock, Trulli, Piquet, Kovalainen, Heidfeld, and Kubica.

With Kazuki finishing sixteenth and Nico eighteenth the Williams team qualifying would come to a very quick end with neither car making it past Q1.  Hardly the performance that team boss Frank Williams would be impressed with.

Q2 would see Glock and Trulli set the early times with Trulli fastest, 1m:12.107, followed by Glock, 1m:12.331. Both Ferrari's and Hamilton would come out early. Raikkonen was now fastest with a 1m:11.950. Only the BMW's and Vettel had yet to come out. Massa would continue to show his excellent pace with a 1m:11.875 to move to the top of the times. But Hamilton would match the Ferrari's with a 1m:11.856 to go fastest. Raikkonen and Trulli had pitted. The times weer been set on the softer tyre. Alonso was now fourth, 1m:12.090. But Kovalainen would move ahead with a 1m:12.023. Alonso was now fifth followed by Trulli, Piquet, Bourdais, Webber, and Glock.

NakajimaVettel would put in a quick lap to improve up to fifth, 1m:12.052. Glock would also improve to take third with a 1m:11.909. Both BMW's were on the track as Kovalainen returned to the circuit while Glock pitted. Kubica was eleventh, 1m:12.300, but this became twelfth as Heidfeld moved into sixth, 1m:12.026. Kovalainen was now fastest in sector one and would continue his quick lap finishing with a 1m:11.768 to move to the top of the times. Raikkonen was now back out on the circuit joined by several other drivers, including Hamilton. Kovalainen would pit while Massa remained in his garage.

The final minute would count down as Raikkonen failed to improve from fifth. One driver who did improve was Vettel who jumped up to second with a 1m;11.845. Bourdais would improve from eleventh to eighth, 1m:12.075. Those not making the cut were Piquet, Webber, Kubica, Coulthard, and Barrichello. The top ten was Kovalainen followed by Vettel, Hamilton, Massa, Glock, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Bourdais, Alonso, and Trulli.

RosbergWith the drivers now running with their race fuel Q3 would start with Glock first out followed by Vettel. Massa was next followed by Hamilton. Glock would set the first time with a 1m:14.311. Vettel was faster with a 1m:13.155. Everyone was out on the track except Bourdais. Glock would pit as Massa went fastest with a time of 1m:12.453. Hamilton was third with a 1m:13.252. Raikkonen was now second, 1m:12.921, but Trulli would move ahead of the Finn with a 1m:12.918. Kovalainen was now fourth, 1m:13.059. Massa would pit along with Vettel and Hamilton.

Raikkonen would pit while Bourdais had yet to set a time. With two minutes left Massa was fastest from Trulli, Raikkonen, Kovalainen, Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso, Heidfeld, and Glock. Everyone was now back out on the track for their final runs. Massa would improve slightly as Hamilton moved into second with a 1m:12.830. This would become fourth as Trulli ns Raikkonen moved into second and third. Kovalainen was fifth followed by Alonso, Vettel, Heidfeld, Bourdais, and Glock. So Massa would take pole and have that advantage over championship rival Hamilton.

For the Williams team Sunday's race will be another one that will be see the team struggle to come home with a reasonable result. Maybe if it rains the team may have a small chance to finish 2008 with some points.
