Williams focused on 2009

Sam Michael
By Andrew Hooper
November 11 2008
Williams F1 Technical Director Sam Michael has spoken of how the Williams team is focused on the 2009 season aiming to improve on their disappointing 2008 season. 2008 would see Williams finish in eighth place in the Constructors Championship. The season saw only two noteable moments, a 3rd placed finish in Australia and a 2nd in Singapore. Th rest of the season was disappointing for the team.

In a feature on the RBS Formula One web site Williams F1 Technical Director Sam Michael spoke of how the team must deliver on producing a more competitive car for the 2009 season. Michael's comments were based on the teams 2008 season that saw the RBS sponsored AT&T Williams team managing only eighth in the Constructors' championship.

Sam MichaelThe 2008 season would only have two high points for the Williams team with a third placed finish for Nico Rosberg in the opening race in Australia followed by a second place in the Singapore Grand Prix. The rest of the season saw both Williams drivers struggle with only a handful of points scoring finishes in the rest of the season.

Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima would finish the season in thirteenth and fifteenth places in the Drivers Championship. One aspect that the team could take some satisfaction from was the reliability of the teams cars during the season even if the FW30 struggled for pace in most races.

Michael said: "Although we have had some strong races this year and a couple of podium finishes, development of the FW30 was not enough to remain competitive."

But 2009 will see a totally new set of challenges face the Williams team with new rules on aerodynamics, slick tyres and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) being introduced. For the Williams team the focus was to now improve the performance of the teams new car for the 2009 season.

Michael added: "Some time ago, we arranged our internal resource to concentrate on development for 2009. Everyone at the factory is now fully focused on next season in order to ensure we have a much more competitive car."

with that logic gpl, RBR should fire Newey too.2seasons of high hopes, nothing rewarded.
Toyota should change their TD every year too.
Much better funded teams are giving more time to their technical director and still fail to achieve what they want.

Its all about resources, which Williams lack.

Every year they are a little too disappointed with their car, and turn to developing next years model.

This behaviour ensures only poor results.

Success comes to the best in season development teams. If you have to blow off next year then so be it, but it is better to work on the here and now, rather than next years dream.

is that why RBR sucks too?

Ummmmm, don't see any RBR reference in my post. I am confused.

Is this a my team suck so so does yours post bond? Or did one of your kids write it, which suddenly makes it seem understandable.

If you must know, I have no allegiance to RBR what so ever and would or am as critical of them.

Though I do believe my observation is still appropriate for Williams, as they have not bothered with aggresive development since 2004. Each year they say, NEXT YEAR. But next year never comes.

I Think RBR had a very good car this year, just look the Toro Rosso, I think the RBR Cars problem was the Engine not the car desing

There are several problems within this post IMO!
1.RBR has a VERY GOOD car?! with the strongest engine at the back of the car, under the hands of one highly rated driver like Vettel, the finished 6th...how on earth a combination of VERY GOOD things can only finish 6th?!
2.Renault...they had the same power plant, they are not a very big spenders like Toyota or Mclaren from what we read in news, they don't have an Adrian Newey in their team too, but see where they finished.

Well apparently it's understandable enough for you to respond.
I've been here long enough to know who your allegiance is to & which team you always seem to attack.

If it was that easy to improve the team without a blank check, Williams would have done it.

Alas, even a well funded team like RBR can't make it work & barely squeaked by with a 3 pts edge on a minnow like Williams.

Can't be their driver now can it?

Yeah right, do you know the diference about a Good Car and a Champion Car? I guess not.

RBR had a good car with a less powerfull engine (renault) Just look at the diference between STR (powered by Ferrari) and RBR (powered by Renault), bouth use the same chassis but not the same engine and that was the main diference, or are you trying to say me that Vettel should win in monza with the RBR car?

Still you don't tell me why Renault and RBR were that much different in their performance.and still you don't enlighten me why a "very good car" (that turned to "a good car" in your last post!) with best engine should finish 6th? I think giving the name of a medicore degin will be better because even best engine and one of the best drivers didn't help them to finish in top half of the table.
About the Monza performance, surely if Vettel was in a RBR, he still was able to finish in a good position and that's because of his remarkable wet weather driving style that has shown within last 2 years.

Williams F1 Poll

With Barrichello, Hulkenberg & the FW32 will Williams improve in 2010?
