April 4 2009
After the final practice session for the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix Nico Rosberg was fastest with kazuki Nakajima in eighth. So of the six practice sessions that have been run so far in the 2009 season Nico has been fastest in five of them. Will he be able to take this pace into qualifying? He was again backed up by his team-mate Kazuki so things were looking pretty good prior to qualifying.

 Malaysian GP Saturday Practice

With the clouds starting to darken over the circuit the final practice session for the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix would get underway. After seeing both AT&T Williams drivers finish Friday practice in the top ten, Nico Rosberg fourth and Kazuki Nakajima eighth, the prospects for another promising session were looking good. There would be a rush of drivers taking to the track all most likely looking to get some track time prior to any possible rain. Both Nico and Kazuki would complete their installation lap and return to their pits. It was confirmed that Raikkonen's Friday problem which saw him jump from his car in the pit lane was related to his KERS. With five minutes completed the track was empty.

NakajimaNico was told by his engineer that if there is any rain it should be light. Glock would be first to return to the track. He was joined by Trulli and Sutil. Piquet was the first of the Renaults to come out. Several other drivers had also come out including Raikkonen, Kubica, Button, Hamilton, Heidfeld, Barrichello, and Webber. Glock would set a slow lap of 1m:40.396. Trulli would move ahead of him with a 1m:40.130. Massa was also out on the track as Sutil went fastest with a 1m:39.365. Massa was now second with a 1m:39.837. Button was now second followed by Piquet. Both Williams drivers weer still in their pits.

Raikkonen was now fifth but Barrichello was now fastest with a 1m:39.266. But Massa would move ahead with a 1m:39.174. Button was now fastest with a 1m:38.601. Both Nico and Kazuki were out on the track. Raikkonen was now second, 1m:39.067. But it was all changing as Barrichello moved into second while Kubica was now third. Alonso was seventh. Massa had pitted as Webber moved to the top of the times with a 1m:38.226. Alonso was second, 1m:38.597. Nico was on a quick lap but he would slow down going down the back straight. But he was back up to speed. Button was again fastest with a 1m:37.969. Alonso was third from Barrichello, Sutil, and Raikkonen. Kazuki was in ninth, 1m:38.990.

Nico would go fastest in the middle sector, finishing his lap with a 1m:38.044 to be in second, 1m:38.044. Kazuki was now up to fifth, 1m:38.228. Glock would run wide at Turn four. Kazuki was now fourth with a 1m:38.124. Hamilton was slowest in eighteenth. Nico was again fastest in the middle sector while Vettel moved into sixth, 1m:38.180. Nico was now fastest with a 1m:37.811. Vettel would improve to be fastest with a 1m:37.735. While most drivers had
pitted Nico and Kazuki were still out on the track. Nico would return to the top with a 1m:37.490. On his next lap Nico was fastest in sector one. Hamilton was still slowest. Both Williams drivers would pit. Hamilton would improve to eighth, 1m:38.690. Buemi was now seventh, 1m:38.441. Hamilton was now fourth, 1m:38.105.

FW31 RearBoth Ferrari's and BMW Sauber's were outside the top ten. Nico was back out with twenty six minutes left in the session. Hamilton was able to improve with a 1m:38.015. He would pit as Barrichello was now in fifth. Kazuki had dropped to sixth. The clouds had moved away allowing the sun to come back out. Raikkonen was now second, 1m:37.494, as Heidfeld moved to the top of the times with a 1m:37.026. The BMW was on the softer tyre. Kazuki was back out on the track and was being told by his engineer not to over drive his car. With just under twenty minutes remaining the order was changed as Massa moved into second, 1m:37.451. Massa would improve with a 1m:37.162. Button was now fastest with a 1m:36.541, running on the softer tyres. There was smoke coming from his Brawn GP car as he went through Turn two.

Nico had pitted, now in fourth. Webber was now second with a 1m:37.011. Vettel was now fifth as Nico dropped to sixth. Kazuki was still out on the track running in eighth, 1m:37.658. Webber would improve with a 1m:37.002 still running on the harder tyres. Kubica was out on soft tyres. He would move into second with a 1m:36.563. Most of the field had pitted as they prepared for their practice qualifying runs. Kovalainen was now fifth, 1m:37.135, running on the softer tyres. Hamilton was twelfth and was on a quick lap on the soft tyres. Button was back out on the track as Hamilton completed his lap to9 be third, 1m:36.657. Barrichello's car would also have a major plume of smoke come from the engine. Glock was now sixth, 1m:37.062. Eleventh placed Raikkonen was on a quick lap as Barrichello went fastest with a 1m:36.519.

Glock was now fifth, 1m:36.765, as Raikkonen moved ahead of Barrichello with a 1m:36.322, again on the soft tyres. Nico was back out on the track as Massa was on a quick lap on the soft tyres. Kazuki would join Nico. There were on two drivers in their pits. Massa was now fastest with a 1m:36.089. But Nico would again be on top with a 1m:35.940, again on the softer tyres. With two minutes remaining Nico was fastest from Massa, Raikkonen, Barrichello, Button, Glock, Kubica, Hamilton, Webber, and Heidfeld in tenth. Trulli would improve to be third, 1m:36.132. Kazuki would improve to be in fifth, 1m:36.325. Webber was looking strong moving into second with a 1m:36.048. Vettel was now fifth, 1m:36.194. Kazuki had dropped to eighth. The Brawn GP indicated that they were running a maximum oil level in the engine which explained the smoke coming out. Prior to pitting Kazuki had set the quickest time in the middle sector.

So of the six practice sessions that have been run so far in the 2009 season Nico was fastest in five of them. Will he be able to take this pace into qualifying? He was again backed up by his team-mate Kazuki so things were looking pretty good prior to qualifying.
