By Andrew Hooper
April 17 2009
The second practice session for the 2009 Chinese GP would see both AT&T Williams drivers put in strong performances with Nico Rosberg finishing in second and Kazuki Nakajima seventh. Kazuki would improve from nineteenth in the earlier session backing up Nico. The quickest times of the session were set on the super soft tyre but most teams would suffer from blistering on the softer tyres.

 Chinese GP Friday 2nd Practice

The second Friday practice would get underway and with ten minutes of the session run it would see Sutil fastest from Vettel and Nakajima. Bourdais would go fastest with a 1m:37.852 and Kazuki would move into second, 1m:37.964.
Trulli was now third. Nico Rosberg was still in his pit and yet to set a time after completing two installation laps. Kazuki was now fastest with a 1m:37.808. This time was over a second faster than his earlier session time. Buemi was now fastest with a 1m:37.702 as Barrichello moved into third, 1m:37.812. Barrichello would improve to be second, 1m:37.800. Nico was now on the track as Kazuki went fastest with a 1m:37.690.

RosbergWith only a handful of drivers on the track Nico was fastest in sector two. His lap would see him fastest with a 1m:37.464 as Kazuki pitted. O his next lap Nico was fastest in sector one. He would improve his time with a 1m:37.346. Trulli was now fastest with a 1m:36.684. Trulli was on the softer option tyre explaining his pace. Trulli's next lap would see him faster with a 1m:36.361. Nico had improved with a 1m:37.022. With a hour and five minutes remaining the order was Trulli from Glock, Nico, Hamilton, Kazuki, Buemi, Barrichello, Bourdais, Massa, and Heidfeld in tenth. Nico had improved again with a 1m:36.973 as Vettel moved into third, 1m:36.568.Bourdais was now fifth followed by Hamilton. On the softer tyre Webber would go fastest with a 1m:36.179. Vettel would move ahead of his Red Bull team-mate with a 1m:36.167.

There was a rush of drivers returning to the track leaving Kovalainen and Kubica the only cars in the pits. Nico was down to a 1m:36.859 and in sixth. Kazuki was down in ninth. Hamilton would pit Button and Barrichello were in ninth and tenth. Kazuki had dropped to eleventh with a 1m:37.690. Nico would improve one place to be fifth, 1m:36.724. Both Nico and Kazuki had pitted along with both Red Bull's. Trulli would improve his time but remained in third. Sixth was Bourdais followed by Sutil, Hamilton, Button, Buemi, Barrichello, and Kazuki in twelfth. Slowest were the Renault's with Alonso ahead of Piquet. Nico would return to the track and would improve to fourth, 1m:36.355. Kazuki was now sixth, 1m:36.606. Vettel was still fastest from Webber and Trulli. Glock was fifth. Kazuki was on the softer tyre. Barrichello would go fastest with a 1m:35.995 again on the softer tyre.

Nico was now sixth as Button moved up to fourth, 1m:36.205. while Kazuki had dropped to eighth. Barrichello would improve his time with a 1m:35.881. Button was now second, 1m:36.059, again on the softer tyre. Kazuki had pitted with just over thirty minutes left in the session. The big names of Massa, Hamilton, and Raikkonen were down in eleventh to thirteenth. Button would improve with a 1m:35.912 to be just 0.031 behind his team-mate. Nico was putting in a longer run as Kazuki came back out. Both Red Bull's had pitted, joined by Button. Kazuki was on a 1m:36.606 and Nico a 1m:36.355.

The super soft front tyre coming off Button's looked very second hand with heavy blistering so it would be interesting to see how they fare in the race. This period of the session was time to run with the super soft tyres. Nico had pitted with twenty minutes remaining. Kazuki was still out on the track. Bourdais was ninth followed by Sutil. The BMW's were down in fifteenth and nineteenth with Kubica ahead of Heidfeld. The super soft tyres coming off the Ferrari's were also heavily grained. Both Brawn cars were back out as Kazuki pitted. Despite running on the softer tyre Hamilton would not improve from twelfth. Nico was on a quick lap setting a personal best in sector one and fastest in sector two. He was on the softer tyre for his lap. His time of 1m:36.184 would see him move into fifth. Button was able to improve with a 1m:35.679 and moved to the top of the times.

As the session drew to a close Nico was able to improve his time, running on the softer tyre, to see him second, 1m:35.704. Kazuki would also improve to be in seventh, 1m:36.377. With the end of the session Button was still fastest from Nico, Barrichello, Webber, Vettel, Trulli, Kazuki, Glock, Kovalainen, and Bourdais in tenth. Massa, Hamilton, and Raikkonen were down the order in twelfth to fourteenth. Another good performance from the Williams team with Nico splitting the two Brawn cars. Kazuki was able to backup his team-mate with an improved performance moving from nineteenth to seventh.
