Chinese GP: Not a good performance from Williams

Nico Rosberg
By Andrew Hooper
April 19 2009
With Nico Rosberg finishing a distant fifteenth and Kazuki Nakajima retiring with a gearbox failure the 2009 Chinese GP was not a good performance from the AT&T Williams team. The team also made some wrong decisions in particular bringing in Nico for an early stop while the race was been started under the Safety car. The team is going to have to push for a much better performance in Bahrain.

 Chinese GP Race Review

Race day for the 2009 Chinese Grand Prix would see a wet track making it a completely different race. For the AT&T Williams team the grid would see Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima start the race from seventh and fourteenth. It looked like been wet for the whole race making race strategy a bit of a lottery. Kazuki would start the race with a heavy car giving him better flexibility for the race. Kazuki would leave his pit on the intermediate tyre for his lap to his grid place while team-mate Nico was on full wets. It would be surprising to see Kazuki start on the intermediates. Both Kubica and Glock would start from the pitlane allowing them to take on more fuel. The rain would start to fall heavily with just minutes before the race.

RosbergIt was announced that the fifty six lap race would start under the Safety car. The grid would move away with a large amount of spray coming up with Alonso would saying that the grip was ok with the full wet tyres. Button would complain that the visibility was bad and that there was standing water in places. Massa would run wide going through the corner coming onto the start straight. There was three laps completed as Sutil went off but was able to continue. Nico would complain that he was having aquaplaning on the main straight. Sutil would pit while Raikkonen would run wide at the final turn. Alonso would say that he felt the conditions were good enough to see the Safety Car pull off. Nico would pit taking on new tyres in what was a change of strategy from a three to a two stop race.

Six laps had been completed with the conditions not improving any. On lap eight Alonso would pit from fifth. It was announced that the Safety Car would be coming in at the end of lap eight. Nico was running last as the race went green. Vettel was leading from Webber, Barrichello, Button, Trulli, Raikkonen, Hamilton, and Buemi in eighth. Hamilton would pass Raikkonen for sixth. Vettel would set the fastest lap under race conditions with a 1m:57.140 on lap nine. Lap ten and Vettel was fastest with a 1m:55.783. Buemi would run wide at the final turn. Heidfeld would also run wide. Hamilton takes fifth from Trulli. Kazuki was down in thirteenth while Nico was nineteenth. Hamilton would run wide at the final turn. Button was up to third after Barrichello ran wide. Buemi would pass Raikkonen for seventh. Massa would also pass his team-mate.

NakajimaHamilton would spin at Turn ten dropping him down to tenth. Buemi would pass Trulli for fifth. Lap thirteen and Vettel was fastest with a 1m:55.277. He was leading from Webber, Button, Barrichello, Buemi, Trulli, Massa, and Raikkonen. Glock and Heidfeld would make contact seeing Heidfeld spin. Both drivers were able to continue. Webber would pit on lap fifteen. Vettel was again fastest with a 1m:54.681. Webber would rejoin in sixth. Vettel would pit on lap sixteen, returning in third. Button was leading from Barrichello. Kazuki would run wide not losing his place. Nico was still last. Lap seventeen the order was Button from Barrichello, Vettel, Buemi, Massa, Webber, Raikkonen, and Hamilton in eighth. Trulli was running slowly with no rear wing after been hit from behind by Kubica going into the final turn. The BMW nearly went over the top of the Toyota. Kubica would pit from his his nose replaced.

The Safety Car would be deployed and Button would pit. Barrichello was also in. Buemi would join them. After having to complete a whole lap Trulli would pit top retire. Buemi had hit the rear of Vettel's car with Vettel been able to continue. Vettel was again leading as Massa came to a stop out on the back straight. Webber was now in third from Raikkonen, Hamilton, Barrichello, Kovalainen, and Bourdais in eighth. Kazuki was now eleventh and Nico fourteenth. The Safety Car would come in at the end of lap twenty two. Bourdais would spin as the race restarted. Kazuki was up to tenth as Hamilton passed Raikkonen for fourth. Alonso would pass Kazuki for tenth on lap twenty four. Glock would pit with front wing damage. Kazuki would run wide at the final turn. Raikkonen would pit from seventh on lap twenty eight.

RosbergKazuki would spin at Turn one running into the gravel. He was able to continue as Piquet would spin at Turn five getting minor damage to his front nose. Kazuki was down to seventeenth as Piquet pitted. Nico was in fourteenth. Button would run wide at Turn one allowing Webber to take second. Button was now third followed by Hamilton, Kovalainen, Barrichello, Buemi, and Alonso in eighth. Button would get past Webber as the Red Bull driver ran wide at the final turn. But Webber would attack Button straight away and would pass him at Turn eight. Nico was up tenth as Alonso pitted. Webber was pushing hard to move up to Vettel going fastest on lap thirty six, 1m:53.382. Bourdais would spin on lap thirty seven. Kazuki was down in seventeenth. Vettel would pit on lap thirty eight. Vettel would rejoin in third with Webber leading from Button. Alonso would spin going through turn thirteen. He would drop to thirteenth.

Nico was up to tenth as Webber pitted from the lead on lap forty. Vettel would set another fastest lap with a 1m:52.918 on lap thirty nine. Glock would pass Raikkonen for eleventh. Nico would pit on lap forty one. Kazuki would also pit. Vettel would pass Button for the lead as Nico had taken on intermediate tyres. Alonso would pass Raikkonen for eleventh. Button would pit on lap forty three as Vettel set a new fastest lap but Barrichello would go faster with a 1m:52.592. Kazuki was now lapped with fourteen laps remaining. Button was down in fourth. Nico was two seconds a lap slower on his intermediates. Barrichello would pit on lap forty four, returning in fifth. The order was Vettel from Webber, Button, Buemi, Barrichello, Hamilton, Kovalainen, and Sutil. Kazuki would pit again on lap forty five this time retiring in his pit. Nico was down in fourteenth.

NakajimaBuemi would pit on lap forty six. Piquet would spin again this time at the final turn but was able to enter the pit lane to have his nose replaced again. Hamilton would run wide allowing Kovalainen to get past his team-mate. The McLaren's were running close to Barrichello. Nico would spin and would have a wild ride starting at Turn five ending up in Turn six. He was able to continue but was down in fifteenth. Nico would pit returning to the full wets. Hamilton would spin in the final turn. Sutil was now sixth followed by Hamilton, and Heidfeld. Lap fifty and Vettel was still leading from Webber and Button. Nico was in sixteenth and one lap down. The conditions were getting worse as Sutil crashed heavily into the barrier as he spun off. He was able to get out of his car. The top eight was now Vettel from Webber, Button, Barrichello, Kovalainen, Hamilton, Glock, and Buemi.

Four laps remaining and Buemi was pushing Glock for seventh. Vettel had eased off with a twelve second lead. He would start his final lap and would complete the lap securing victory in the 2009 Chinese Grand Prix. This would be Red Bull's first Grand Prix win as well as a one-two with Webber coming home second. Third was Button from Barrichello, Kovalainen, Hamilton, Glock, and Buemi in eighth. For the Williams team the race would see Nico come home in fifteenth and Kazuki would retire. A race that the Williams will want to forget quickly. Their call to bring Nico in early failed to deliver while the race performances of both drivers was hardly encouraging. Despite strong performances in the practice sessions the Williams team has yet to turn this into a good result come race
day.
