Monaco GP: Three points from Rosberg's sixth place

Rosberg finishes sixth
By Andrew Hooper
May 24 2009
The AT&T Williams team would come away with three points from a sixth from Nico Rosberg. Nico was able to run at the front but in his middle stint would lose time and would drop back finishing well behind fifth place. Kazuki Nakajima would spin his car into the barrier on the last lap ending his race, a very embarrassing moment for him. Kazuki must now be causing the Williams team some concern.

 Monaco GP Race Review

AT&T Williams drivers Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima would start the seventy eight lap 2009 Monaco Grand Prix from sixth and tenth. The Williams would try to cover all the bases with Nico running light and Kazuki running a heavier fuel load, some twenty six kilos more than Nico. It was estimated that Nico would pit around lap seventeen and Kazuki lap thirty two. Strategy would
play a big role in this race as it is very difficult to pass in the narrow confirms of this street circuit.

RosbergWith Button on pole and Raikkonen second, and running KERS, the start would be interesting. After his qualifying crash Hamilton would start from the back of the grid, while Glock would start from the pit lane. Barrichello was third followed by Vettel, Massa, Nico, and Kovalainen.

Button was on the super soft tyre leading the field away on the formation lap. Most of the rest of the field were on the harder tyre. On the grid there appeared to be smoke coming from Nico's car, something to look out for. Raikkonen was on the harder tyre along with Nico. Kazuki was also on the harder tyre. Button returned to the grid and the filed formed up. The lights went out and away they went with everyone making a clean start. Button was leading from Barrichello, Raikkonen, Vettel and Massa. Nico was sixth and Kazuki tenth. The Brawn cars would start to pull away from the field. Barrichello was also on the softer tyre.

RosbergLap two and Button was fastest with a 1m:19.330. Nico was one second behind Massa. Kubica would make a slow start and on lap three would pit. lap three and Barrichello would respond with a new fastest lap, 1m:18.471. Nico was right behind Massa as Glock would miss the corner at the swimming pool complex. Button was fastest on lap four, 1m:18.292. Kazuki was still in tenth 2.1 seconds behind Alonso. Lap five and Button was fastest with a 1m:17.722. Hamilton was stuck behind Heidfeld as Massa tried to pass Vettel out of the tunnel and into the chicane. lap six and Raikkonen was now fastest with a 1m:17.278. Massa would miss the chicane after the tunnel moving ahead of Vettel. Massa would have to slow to allow Vettel pass but Nico would take the opportunity to pass the Ferrari.

NakajimaNico was now fifth as Button went faster on lap seven, 1m:16.676, and Nico started to attack a slowing Vettel. Vettel was sliding all over the place as Barrichello was told to look after his super soft tyres. Nico would get past Vettel in the swimming pool complex, joined by Massa, as Vettel came into the pits. Hamilton would also pit while Buemi would hit the back of Piquet at St Devote. Hamilton was back out on the harder tyre. Piquet would pit while Nico started to pick up his pace. Raikkonen was now right behind Barrichello as the Brawn driver started to struggle with the super soft tyres. Nico was fastest in sector one on lap thirteen. He would finish the lap fastest with a 1m:16.619 but Massa went faster with a 1m:16.383.

Nico and Massa were now flying setting the pace and on lap fourteen Nico was fastest with a 1m:16.373. Nico was in fourth while Kazuki was now ninth. Nico was nine seconds behind Raikkonen as Raikkonen pitted on lap sixteen and would return with the harder tyre. Nico was even faster with a 1m:16.319 on lap fifteen. He was now third while Raikkonen retuned in seventh. Vettel would
hit the barrier at St Devote while Barrichello pitted on lap seventeen. He would take the harder tyre as Nico went fastest on alp sixteen, 1m:16.187. Vettel would wreck the left rear suspension as he hit the barrier. Button would pit on lap seventeen seeing Nico now leading.

RosbergButton would come back out in second ahead of Massa. Massa was looking to pass Button while Nico would pit on lap eighteen allowing Button to retake the lead. Nico would continue on the harder tyre. Nico would return in eighth. Nico was running right in front of Kazuki as Massa continued to hound Button. Kovalainen was now third followed by Webber, Barrichello, Raikkonen, Alonso, and Nico. Lap twenty one and Massa would pit from second. Massa would return in seventh. Nico certainly lost out in the first round of pit stops. Kovalainen would pit on lap twenty two, staying on the harder tyre. Webber would come back out in front of Nico in sixth. Nico was seventh followed by Kovalainen.

At the front Button was still leading from Barrichello, Raikkonen, Alonso, Massa, Webber, Nico, and Kovalainen. Nico was dropping away from Webber while Button's lead over Barrichello was now 16.5 seconds. Nico was nearly a second slower than Webber. Alonso would pit on lap twenty nine as Barrichello went fastest with a 1m:16.152 on lap twenty eight. Alonso was down in eleventh. Kazuki would set a personal best on lap twenty nine with a 1m:17.337. Trulli and Glock were in thirteenth and fourteenth. Kubica would pit only to retire. Lap thirty and Nico was seven tenths slower than Webber. He was now 5.3 seconds behind the Red Bull. Lap thirty one and the Brawns would share the fastest lap but Raikkonen went fastest only to see Massa move ahead of him with a 1m:15.908.

RosbergKazuki was 2.9 seconds behind Kovalainen while the Brawn cars and Ferrari's shared the fastest lap. Nico continued to drop away from Webber while Kazuki would pit from eighth on lap thirty six returning on the harder tyre. This would mean that Kazuki would have to pit again. Kazuki was down in twelfth while Nico remained in sixth 8.7 seconds behind Webber. Button had lapped Hamilton while at the front the Brawn's and Ferrari's continued to trade fastest laps. Massa was fastest on lap thirty eight, 1m:15.609. Webber was consistently faster than Nico with Nico dropping to be 10.1 seconds behind after thirty nine laps. Yet to stop were Bourdais, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Trulli, and Glock.

Lap forty two and Webber was fastest with a 1m:15.567. Eleventh placed Heidfeld would pit on lap forty three. He was back out on the super soft tyre. Webber was again fastest on lap forty five with a 1m:15.321. Nico was now thirteen seconds behind Webber, and he would continue to lose time. Button was leading easily from Barrichello with Raikkonen and Massa third and fourth. Lap forty nine and Button was fastest with a 1m:15.190 and was now leading by 16.4 seconds. Barrichello would pit from second on lap fifty one. Massa was fastest on lap fifty, 1m:15.154, while Bourdais pitted. Button would pit on lap fifty one. He would come back out behind Raikkonen running on the harder tyre. Kovalainen would crash in the final corner of the swimming pool complex. He had run wide and spun his car with the nose hitting the barrier and then backing the car into the barrier.

NakajimaRaikkonen would pit on lap fifty four having to take on the super soft tyre. He would have to run on these tyres for twenty five laps. Raikkonen was now fifth ahead of Nico by 2.2 seconds. Button was again leading from Massa, Webber, Barrichello, and Kimi. Even though Massa was right with Button Button was effectively one pit stop ahead of the Ferrari. Massa and Webber would pit on lap fifty seven. Both drivers were now on the super soft tyres and having to run with them for twenty one laps. Massa was now fourth ahead of Nico, Webber, Alonso, and Bourdais in eighth. Nico was 1.9 seconds behind Massa but was yet to make his next stop. But Nico continued to circulate around the track still on the harder tyre. Kazuki was down in tenth.

Nico continued to struggle being a second slower than Massa on lap sixth one. Lap sixty two and Nico was able to take 0.5 seconds from Massa. On the super soft tyre the Ferrari's pace was starting to drop off. Alonso was 9.1 seconds behind Webber. Bourdais was 30.0 seconds behind Alonso. Thirteen laps remaining and Nico would pit from fifth. He would take on the super soft
tyre returning in seventh place. Hopefully having only to run for a fewer number of laps on the softer tyre could be to his advantage. Alonso would pit on lap sixty seven seeing Nico move up to sixth, but he was 17.8 seconds behind Webber. But Nico would take a few tenths off Webber after lap sixty seven.

NakajimaButton was still leading from Barrichello with Raikkonen third and Massa right behind him in fourth. Kazuki continued to run in tenth. With only nine laps remaining time was running out for Nico to make any move towards Webber. Sixth place would be the best he could ope fro while Kazuki would pit on lap seventh three to take on the super soft tyres for the run to the finish. AS the laps counted down Button continued to lead and would start his final lap as Kazuki went into the barrier at Mirabeau. He would spin his car into the barrier. It did not matter as Kazuki was not looking at scoring any points. Button would cross the finish line to take victory from Barrichello, Raikkonen, Massa, Webber, Nico, Alonso, and Bourdais scored the final point.

For the AT&T Williams team the race would see Nico come away with two points. Nico started sixth and finished sixth. His middle stint of the race was where he lost out but he was running longer than Webber in front of him. For Kazuki to spin on the last lap must be very embarrassing for the Japanese driver. He is still yet to score a point and now must be causing the Williams team some
concern.
