Kazuki Nakajima
By Andrew Hooper
June 6 2009
The final practice session for the 2009 Turkish Grand Prix would see the AT&T Williams team drivers finish in fourth and eighth, with Kazuki Nakajima ahead of his team-mate Nico Rosberg. Kazuki had again out performed his team-mate but will he repeat this in qualifying? Overall another solid performance from both Williams drivers in the lead-up to qualifying. Fastest was Massa.

 Turkish GP Saturday Practice

With sunny conditions greeting the drivers the final practice session for the 2009 Turkish Grand Prix would get underway. For the AT&T Williams team the lead-up to today was encouraging with the Williams drivers finishing Friday with the fourth and seventh fastest times. Kazuki Nakajima was ahead of his team-mate Nico Rosberg so it would be interesting to see if Kazuki can continue this in the Saturday practice and qualifying. It would also be interesting to see if the Williams team can have a positive Saturday. First out in the session was Glock with Nico joining several other drivers out on the track. Kazuki would also come out for his installation lap with Raikkonen and Barrichello the only two yet to come out.

NakajimaBoth Williams drivers would pit along with the rest of the field. Both Raikkonen and Barrichello would take to the track with fifty three minutes left in the session. Both would pit while Massa took to the track. Trulli was next out along with Glock and Sutil. Massa would set the first time with a 1m:30.238. He would lower this to a 1m:29.759 on his next lap. Trulli was second followed by Sutil and Glock. Massa would again improve with a 1m:29.046 while Trulli was down to a 1m:29.754. The drivers were running on the harder tyre as Fisichella and Alonso left the pits.

Kubica was also out on the track as Trulli would run wide at Turn eight. Massa would take a tenth off his time with a 1m:29.036 while Trulli was down to a 1m:29.754. Sutil was still third followed by Glock, Kubica, Alonso, and Fisichella. Only a handful of cars were in their garages with forty minutes remaining. Massa and Trulli would pit. Kazuki was sixth with a 1m:29.764. Nico was on a quick lap and would move up to third, 1m:29.400 but was passed by Sutil with a 1m:29.156.

Button was now second, 1m:29.067, while Heidfeld moved to fifth. Nico was now eighth and Kazuki eleventh. Sutil would pit while Kovalainen would move up to fifth. Barrichello was sixth while Kovalainen would run wide at Turn eight. Bourdais was now seventh while Kazuki was up to eighth. Barrichello would go fastest with a 1m:28.514, while Nico was able to move up to third, 1m:28.636. Kazuki had dropped down to fifteenth, 1m:29.265. Raikkonen was now fourth followed by Hamilton, Heidfeld, Webber, and Button. Nico was now fastest with a 1m:28.364, running on the softer tyre. Barrichello was second, 1m:28.514, followed by Massa, Kazuki, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Webber, and Heidfeld in eighth. Both Nico and Kazuki would pit.

RosbergButton would improve to now be third as Hamilton moved up to fourth. Kazuki had dropped to sixth. Piquet had yet to set a time. Most of the drivers had returned to their pits while Massa would move up to fourth, 1m:28.540. Piquet's first lap would see him in twelfth, 1m:29.081. Massa would pit in a quick lap setting the quickest time in sector two. He would finish fastest with a 1m:28.253, running on the harder tyre. Piquet was now fourth, 1m:28.503, running on the softer tyre. Massa would lower his time with a 1m:27.983. Nico was back out on the track with twenty two minutes remaining. He was joined by the majority of the field. Kazuki remained in the pits but would eventually come back out.

Nico was currently second and Kazuki seventh. Massa would pit seeing just four drivers in their pits. Alonso was down in nineteenth. Raikkonen was up to third, 1m:28.467, while Barrichello was up to fourth. Raikkonen would pit with just over fifteen minutes left in the session. Kazuki had dropped to ninth, 1m:28.645. Nico was again running on the softer tyre but he would pit after setting a personal best in the middle sector. Kazuki was now third, 1m:28.364, running on the harder tyre. On the harder tyre Barrichello would move up to second, 1m:28.332. Kovalainen was down in tenth. Everyone would pit seeing Massa out by himself running on the softer tyre.

With six minutes left the field would start to return to the track, including Nico. Kazuki was still in his pit but with five minutes left he would leave the pit lane. Nico was out on the harder tyre for his final run. Only Sutil was in the pits Some drivers like Barrichello and Button were on the softer tyre. Button would move up to third, 1m:28.360 but Glock would push everyone down the order with a 1m:28.094 to move into second, running on the softer tyre. Glock would spin at Turn one but would continue.

Nico was down in eighth. with the end of the session Massa was still fastest from Trulli, Glock, Kazuki, Kubica, Barrichello, Button, Nico, Raikkonen, and Vettel in tenth. The drivers would again complete practice starts from the grid prior to returning to their pits.

Kazuki had again out performed his team-mate in this session. Will he repeat this in qualifying? Another solid performance from both Williams drivers in the lead-up to qualifying. Nico and Kazuki took different approaches to the session with Nico coming out early on the softer tyre to set his quickest time while Kazuki would wait until the final run late in the session.
