On a fine and
dry but cool day the opening Thursday practice for the 2010 Monaco Grand
Prix would commence. For the AT&T Williams team would be making significant
changes to cope with the demands of the tight Monaco track. The drivers
would also have to cope with higher kerbs at the chicane after the tunnel as
well as parts of the track that had been resurfaced. Both drivers would be
hoping for a better performance than they had in Spain. As for new parts for
the Williams drivers the opening Thursday session would see a new rear wing
assembly for Rubens Barrichello while Nico Hulkenberg has the new front wing
first seen in Spain. The second Thursday session would see Nico running the
new rear wing and Rubens the front wing.
There would be a rush of drivers coming out of the pits including Nico. Just
as quickly they would pit after their installation laps. Rubens would be one
of the last drivers to take to the track. He would be joined by both of the
McLaren's. The track would soon empty as everyone returned to their pits.
With ten minutes of the ninety minute session complete no one had set a
time. As for their tyres Bridgestone would be supplying the medium and soft
compounds. First back out was Alguersuari. He would set a time of 1m:30.020
on his first
timed lap. With twenty minutes of the session run there was only the Torro
Rosso out on the track. Alguersuari would improve with a 1m:26.141.

came onto the main straight. Rubens was still in ninth with a 1m:18.057
having picked up a few tenths. Nico was now in twelfth with a 1m:19.514.
Both Red Bull cars had yet to set a time with forty three minutes left in

up into the Casino square. He lost the rear end with his rear wing just
hitting the barrier. The track was now very busy with just six cars in the

thirteenth. Hamilton was fastest with a 1m:16.710 from Massa, Button, Sutil,
Kubica, Rosberg, Alonso, Buemi, Schumacher, Alguersuari, Rubens, Webber, and
Nico.
Chandhok's car was craned away while team-mate Senna was slowest with a

remaining and Alonso was still fastest from Kubica, Vettel, Massa,

As the final two minutes counted down Kobayashi would lose his front wing as
well as damaging his right front and left rear wheels. He ran wide going
through the swimming pool complex hitting the outside barrier doing the
damage. The session would end with Rubens and Nico still in twelfth and
sixteenth. Alonso was still fastest from Vettel, Kubica, Webber, Massa,
Schumacher, Hamilton, Button, Sutil, Buemi, Rosberg, and Rubens
in twelfth. Not the most of encouraging of starts to the weekend. Both
Williams drivers were off the pace but it is early days in terms of setup
making any real judgement as to their pace a bit premature. |
