We here from Williams F1 reserve driver Valtteri Bottas after he completed the second day of the teams Barcelona Test.
& A Valtteri Bottas Barcelona Test Day Two
Q: So quite a
lot of running .... so can you sum up your first day with the FW34?
VB: Yeah it was a good day for me because we had a lot of laps like planned
... so it is the only test day I will have before the Malaysian free
practice I will drive so it was an important day and it was really nice to
feel the FW34. There is some differences to the 33 and yeah I feel very
positive and I was especially happy with the Renault engine as there is a
difference there in the drivability so yeah so far it is good.
Q: Three months gap between the two runs from Abu Dhabi to here was it
easy to get back into it?
VB: It took a couple of runs in the morning ... made it a bit more
challenging because the weather was really cold and the track was really
slippery but yeah after a couple of runs I was getting back to the rhythm
and it was pretty good.
Q: You didn't do anymore of this aero measuring they did yesterday?
VB: No that was all completely yesterday.
Q: So just setup work, continuing with the setup work in the afternoon?
VB: Yes exactly I am understanding the car better and yeah a lot of setup
work and a lot of different tests. I think we learnt a lot today.
Q: Yesterday that was a bit of a problem with the durability of the
tyres. Did you get on top of that .. did you find something?
VB: Yeah we had some quite long runs. Normally our runs were ten laps so you
can see how well the tyres were lasting. Also for me it was interesting to
see what kind of drop off there is with these tyres.
Q: It seems that you were trying to do a little bit or work that would
simulate the kind of thing you would be doing on the Friday mornings at a
Grand Prix. Was that the aim to be doing the sort of thing you will need to
be particularly strong at this year?
VB: Maybe a little bit yeah I think we had the same style of testing what
will be on Friday's but also one goal was definitely more mileage on the car
and see how the reliability of the car and to try and understand better the
car because there is still a lot of setup stuff that we can try and work on.
Q: You used the super soft compounds did you?
VB: We used one set of super softs at the end of the day yes.
Q: And the other soft and medium as well?
VB: We tried all of them.
Q: Are you feeling pretty confident now with the experience that you have
got that you can make a big contribution on the Fridays from the off?
VB: I think I am capable to be a help for the team on Fridays. I felt really
good in the car already this afternoon and yeah I am sure it will be fine
and soon as the Fridays start I will get more and more mileage. I am really
Q: Yesterday Bruno said that it is important to have different drivers to
test the car and to have different perspectives. Do you think you have
already been useful in that aspect?
VB: I think so we all .. of course there is every driver has a different
perspective and I think that is a good thing. Always the engineers love new
comments and different complaints about the car so I think it is good.
Q: How does your driving style compare to the driving style of the two
VB: That is a tough one yeah obviously I think Bruno and Pastor have
different kind of driving styles so maybe I can say I am somewhere in the
Q: In Abu Dhabi you were driving with rookies like you here you are
driving against the guys who are going to run in the championship. Does it
make any difference been on the same track with the Alonso's, Vettel's and
VB: Well of course it was nice because obviously the first time for me in a
real test it was nice to see all those world champions on the track at the
same time. But in the end it does not make a difference as we focus on our
own job. We didn't look at the lap times were were completely focused on the
Q: Have the other Finnish drivers talked to you. Kimi is not here but
Heikki talk to you?
VB: Yeah I know them a little bit now.
Q: Can you go to them to get some help if you maybe a little bit and
VB: Probably yeah we will see. I will try at some point.
Q: Yesterday Bruno said that he had a few problems with the marbles and
the car sliding around a lot in the low speed corners. How is that today,
any improvement there?
VB: Yeah I think we were also sliding quite a bit today and I agree with
Bruno in the slow speed there is still something we can improve. But again
today we learnt more about that and the cars handling in the slow speed
corners so I think we know more today than yesterday so I think it was good.
Q: Do you think you need new parts for that or is it just to improve this
problem or is it more a question of different settings?
VB: Yeah I we can improve, its possible to improve the car.
Q: Just with settings or without creating new parts?
VB: That is difficult to say but we are working on it.
