At the recent
pre-season test sessions at the Barcelona circuit there was a lot of
discussion as to whether or not the Williams team would introduce a new
front nose and wing. But at the end of testing the team had confirmed that
it would not be until one of the opening races in the season before it would
be seen.
But for team
driver Felipe Massa spoke of how he is hoping to get the new nose and front
wing up on the FW38 as soon as possible.
In the recent tests the nose that the team ran was essentially the same as
they ran in the 2015 season. But the first time that a nose nose and wing
was mentioned was when Technical boss Pat Symonds hinted that there was a
new nose and that it would be introduced within the first few races of 2016.
"Changes in the
bodywork - the rear - we should use in Australia, plus a few (other) small
details," Symonds told Globo Esporte.
"An interesting change is the front wing, but we still need to pass the
crash test to make sure we can use it. So hopefully we can do that as soon
as possible because it is good for the car," Massa added.
For Felipe he feels that the aerodynamics of the FW38 are an area with the
most room for improvement.
"We have improved, but we still can improve more," Felipe said.
"The car we have now has more downforce, but we did not expect it to still
be the fastest on the straight. This shows that there is still work for us
to do to improve the car with downforce," added Massa.
As for how the Williams team will fare in the opening race in Melbourne,
Felipe added: "Well, if I had to make a bet, I would put Mercedes in front
of Ferrari.
"Then I think we have a great chance to be third. Of course it is always
difficult to be sure, but anyway it would already be a positive result even
if definitely we want more."
