YOUTH & RESERVES Nº4 - JIMMY SMITH

JIMMY SMITH
By dixon9 April 2 2007
“Oh! Jimmy Jimmy! Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Smith!” Currently on loan to QPR, the Loftus Road faithful have quite taken to our youngster who’s been making a more than valid contribution to the Shepherd’s Bush side. Smith has been with Chelsea since 9 years of age, last season he was top scorer for the reserves and was team captain.

Jimmy is also an U19 England internationalJimmy has just turned 20 so consequently must be approaching a decision on his future at Chelsea.

Mourinho has said that he’d be looking at bringing “…1 or 2 youngsters into next season’s senior squad….perhaps more,”  so we’ll have to see what happens to the attacking midfielder from the east end.  Jose Mourinho has also stated that he would like to see more of the likes of Smith coming through the academy so let’s see.

James Smith was born in Newham on the 7th January 1987 and is a product of Chelsea’s youth academy when after 3 years he made his first appearance for Chelsea last season when he came on against Newcastle.

Jimmy was then loaned out to QPR at the beginning of this season to get more competitive experience.  During his first month as Loftus Road he scored twice in his first two games causing John Gregory to ask for an extension on the loan period (you can hear Gregory’s comments on Smith in the video below) and then again, a further extension which terminates at the end of this season.

Despite not being a forward, he has scored 5 goals in 18 games in the Championship but he has also picked up 5 yellow cards so he’s no shrinking violet.

Jimmy actually lived very close to Joe Cole and even used to play football with him as a kid.
