he facility was built in the days when a dozen people could run an F1 team and still go and rip themselves to bits in a Montreal nightclub every evening. The pits and what is laughingly called “the paddock” at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, have been second only to the shacks of Sao Paolo at the bottom of the list of circuits visited on the F1 calendar, but this year all that has changed.
Each team has its own very nice two storey hospitality house – okay so it’s not quite a Red Bull Energy Station - and a great guest and team area overlooking the famous Olympic Rowing Basin. On top of that, there’s a brand new media centre to keep the moaning journalists happy and all of this at a cost of Canadian $5.5 million! The media used to have to walk up and down three flights of steps in the control tower to get to their desks, but this was proving too much for some of the old boys. The new Press Centre floats on the water behind the paddock, which means the rat population has obviously gone up by about one hundred percent for the weekend.
With today’s overcast weather due to make way for very hot and sunny weather times over the weekend, it’s all shaping up to be a more enjoyable and less cramped race than usual. But be warned, there are threats of thunderstorms in the next couple of days, so it will be a good chance to see if the people who built the new facilities cut any cost corners when it comes to sticking the roof on.
