Newey poised to begin work on 2017 Red Bull F1 car

Glad to see Newey is going to be heavily involved in the design of Red Bulls 2017 car, I hope he designs a beast.

Red Bull expects Formula 1 engineering legend Adrian Newey to imminently start focussing his efforts on its 2017 car, now that the regulations have been defined and his America's Cup work is done.

Newey has stepped back from a full-time role with the Formula 1 team so he could get involved in other design projects.

That has included the recently announced Aston Martin hypercar, plus work on an America's Cup yacht design for Ben Ainslie's effort.

With F1's 2017 car regulations having now been set in stone, Red Bull boss Christian Horner says Newey will soon get heavily involved in the project even if he will not be returning wholly to grand prix racing.

“Adrian will be splitting his time, as last year, 50-50,” explained Horner. “Before too long he’ll be starting to look at 2017, now that those regulations look pretty fixed.

“It’s great to have him as part of what we’re doing, and it’s also great that the technical team, the senior technical team, are really asserting and establishing themselves as well.”

Cars and boats

Horner has not ruled out Newey getting involved in further road car projects in the future, with the Aston Martin car set to hit the road in 2018.

“[Adrian] has more than enough on his plate for the next two years with this road car,” he said. “Beyond that, let’s see. That could evolve into further cars with Aston Martin. The ambition doesn’t start and stop with one vehicle.”

However, Horner has confirmed that Newey has signed off his work on the America's Cup project.

“We’ve completed the work we were contracted to do. Our involvement in America’s Cup is now finished. We delivered a product that will hopefully assist them. We’ve now completed that assignment.”
