Weather conditions finally stabilised at Barcelona to enable the drivers to get some decent testing done. The new boy at Williams, Nakajima only came out in the afternoon session which makes the fact that he finished at the top of the table even more impressive. McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen was a close second, followed by test driver Pedro de la Rosa; both were focusing on aerodynamic work. Felipe Massa’s pace was strong throughout a number of long stints in the Ferrari and he finished fourth.

All things considered though, it was pretty tight between the top five drivers with Nico Rosberg in the Williams taking that fifth slot. Several red flags interrupted proceedings due to Alsonso, Webber and Kovalainen having to stop on the track.

Timo Glock spun off but managed not to cause any damage to his car. Alonso finished in ninth position but was not unduly concerned about this as he had spent the day carrying out set up work on his Renault R28. He said “The track conditions were not perfect, but they were good enough for what we needed to test and they remained consistent for the whole day”. Rookie team mate Nelson Piquet Jr ended the day in eleventh after putting in a massive 104 laps.
