Lewis hasn’t exactly been setting the timesheets on fire this week in Barcelona, but he feels confidant McLaren has ‘definitely’ made a step forward with its MP4-23 car in Spain. McLaren will go to the Spanish Grand Prix chasing the tails of both Ferrari and BMW as far as the constructors’ standings are concerned. They’ve had two very disappointing races, especially Bahrain where they failed to score a podium for the first time in twenty races. Despite the less than average time results for the team Lewis claims that testing new aerodynamics on the car this week has made a positive difference. “I think at this test everyone is doing something different. Some teams are running slick tyres, some are running groove. We are just focusing on the job, the car is feeling better and I feel a lot more comfortable in it”. Lewis had his worst race of his 20-race Formula 1 career in Bahrain but insists he is focused on getting his title bid back on track. Despite a superb win at the first Grand Prix in Australia, the following two races were less than auspicious for him and he is currently third in the drivers’ standings, five points off Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. His mood remains buoyant though. “Yes, for sure, you can learn something at every race, even if you win”.
