Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Heikki Kovalainen was fastest on the second day of testing at the Northamtonshire circuit. Heikki’s best time was a tenth of a second faster than Felipe Massa’s best time from yesterday’s session. Heikki completed work on the setup and evaluation of McLaren’s new front wing; he also put more millage on each of the parts.
Toyota’s Jarno Trulli was the next fastest runner, though he was three tenths of a second adrift of the McLaren, Toyota’s pace does look promising, and the Japanese team will certainly be looking to capitalize on what looks to be a good level of pace.
Williams driver Nico Rosberg finished the days testing in third place, though the German was six tenths of a second per lap behind Heikki in the pacesetting McLaren. Just a tenth behind Rosberg in the Williams was Renaults Nelson Piquet Jr, who will be looking to gather some critical points, on a track he should know well from his GP2 days.
Sebastian Vettel improved dramatically on his time from yesterday by over three seconds, the German having a better run than yesterday in the STR03. Behind him was BMW’s Robert Kubica, who didn’t have the best of luck at the British circuit; as the British weather is, a rain shower hit the field, cut short BMW’s plans for aero testing.
Yesterdays fastest runner, Felipe Massa was happy with his days running, dispite ending up in 7th place, a second off the pace of the lead driver, he was followed home in 8th by Red Bulls Mark Webber, who endured a hellish day of testing. At first a very troublesome electronic problem meant that the Australian could only complete four laps in the morning session, his afternoon session faired little better when his run was interrupted by red flags.
Honda’s Jenson Button finished the day in 9th place, an encouraging 1.3 seconds behind the front running McLaren, who was trying out a new front wing for next weeks race, on his way to 9th, Button racked up an impressive 106 laps of the 5.1km circuit. Giancarlo Fisichella took over from Vitantionio Liuzzi in the Force India, unfortunately for him he lost control of the VJM01 at Beckets; which ended his days running, we hear that Giancarlo is unharmed by this accident.
