Back: To The Future?

Could it be?
By Andy Brown June 27 2008
There is a groundswell of reports from all over the press, both mainstream and specialist rugby press, that Neil Back is to become Director of Rugby/Head Coach at Leeds Carnegie this season. A couple of weeks ago I wrote a speculative article assessing various possible candidates and put Back in as a 100-1 shot. Certainly those odds are considerably shorter today, but it isn't a done deal.

How do I know this? It's perfectly simple – it hasn't been announced on the official site yet. Leeds Rugby are spectacularly conservative as far as issuing press releases are concerned. We complain that we don't get enough information from them and that we read Leeds related news elsewhere consistently before it becomes available officially, and perhaps we are justified in that. However the press office at Headingley is adamant that they will not issue any news item that isn't dyed-in-the-wool, 100% true – they've had their fingers burned before when announcing a player signing as fact, only to have him pull out late in the proceedings, but before there was any ink on the contract. Embarrassment all round, and a vow never to do that again. Personally, I think their caution is justifiable, but frustrating. However we hear latterly that BBC Radio Leeds are reporting that the interview process is still underway, and that Back has, as yet, not been appointed.

But enough about press releases and news management – what of Back himself? What could he do for Leeds? What are his credentials? Who, not to put too fine a point on it, is he?

Most of you aren't from Mars, so you'll have heard of him (even my wife has for cripes sake, THAT'S how well known he is!). He's a legendary England and Leicester Tigers openside, fondly remembered as a key man in the Hill-Back-Dallalglio triumvirate that dominated the breakdowns at international level between 2000 – 2003. Not so fondly remembered by Freddy and the Munstermen for the "Hand of God" incident that – unfairly – did for them in the Heineken Cup. And he won't fondly remember Jack Rowell, who, as England head coach in the nineties, suggested he was too small to be an international player.

As a coach, he's been in the backroom staff for the Tigers for the last four years as defence coach, and, having spent eighteen years at the East Midlands club, he appears to be moving on to prove his coaching is as good as his playing career was. If that's true, then he will be a formidable Head Coach.

There has been some mild criticism of the previous regime under Stuart Lancaster, suggesting his profile in the international rugby world wasn't enough to attract the right calibre of player. Lancaster denied this, citing that rugby players don't make their career decisions by whatever is said in newspapers (or on websites come to that!). Whatever the truth of it, no one could possibly deny a lack of profile in Back's case.

He's got the profile, he's got the experience of top level coaching in the Premiership, he's got experience of playing at the highest level possible. Only one question remains….

Has he got a DeLorean?

Re: Back: To The Future?
Whatever we think about this (possible) appointment, for sure we need a defence coach after last seasons shambolic "scores against".

If it is Neil Back, who apparantly has been specifically the defence coach at Leicester, then that sounds like a good appointment.

Pity about loosing Biggsy though, despite the inevitably of such an occurence.

Topic for a new thread perhaps.

"How many players become England players after leaving Leeds Rugby?"

Roll on the 2008/9 season. We will get more wins!

Quite agree about making announcements too early.

We have an awful example the other side of the North Stand when YCCC 'unveiled' Chris Adams as director of cricket. Photos were published of him in Yorkshire kit - and then he changd his mind and remained at Sussex.

Well I am going to put my predjudice against the fella to one side for the good of Leeds. This has to be a move in the right direction. Quality players will want to work with this guy and be part of what he tries to build at Headingley. Its going to be a challenge for him mind but he is definately up to the job. Best news since Henry Paul if its true.

My depression during the course of last season ...as far as leeds was concerned was because I was very upset at what happened. Its how I deal with things WW but when good things are done and I can see that positive steps have been made it lifts me no end and I can see that this appointment has to be one of the best and most positive pieces of news for a long long time.

Here's something to think about....Smith is now favourite to be named as backs coach for England, where does this leave Callard. Now bear with me, what if we get Backy and Callard......? Yeh that's what I thought when I read APB article and Backy was on there. Fingers and every other thing you can cross you never know - never say never.

Not bad thinking Tukey, we should also have positive thoughts on Theakston's becoming our main sponsor with lots of outlets around the ground,a new Home & Away shirt that have collars smaller than a 747 wing. A new mascot that looks like a big dog and crowds who all pay to watch the match.

I'll repeat Callard is Kicking coach for England not attack coach.
