Tough Australian Qualifying for McLaren Mercedes
By Läel Damasceno
March 28 2009
Mercedes lock out the front row but its not with McLaren. Lack of pace and gearbox gremlins hamper McLaren Down Under. The McLaren duo start tomorrow's Australian Grand Prix from a very unknown territory. The team put in the worst qualifying performance since 2005.

Heikki started his Q1 with the Prime tyres, he set his best time of 1m27.016s before moving on to the options on his way to set the 13th fastest time and move on to the second session with the best time of 1m26.184s. Lewis opted to start with the option tyres and set a lap 1m26.454s to finish the first shoot out session 15th fastest. On his second flying lap something broke in the back of the car, and even though he advanced to the second session he would not be able to participate. McLaren will have to replace Lewis' gearbox and therefore forcing him to start from 18th place with both Toyotas behind him after being excluded from qualifying.

Onto the second shoot out session and Heikki goes out on the option tyres. He set a time 1m25.726s on his way to a provisional 14th on the grid. Unfortunately Heikki missed moving on to Q3 by less than half a second. The car lacked grip and couldn't make use of the good balance it had.

Tomorrow's race will be more than interesting to watch with both BGP cars lining up 1-2. The Mercedes power plants continue to lead the field thus far. Lets wait and see what is to come from tomorrow's Australian GP.
